BURT REYNOLDS HEART SCARE CONCERNS, WELL, BURT REYNOLDS?
March 3 2010
Miami, FL – Success in any field can be a fleeting thing. The long climb to the top, the satisfaction of redemption, and the inevitable decline either as a result of some disaster or victim of a new claimant to the throne are all a part of the story of
success, no matter how much people may try to fight their destiny. For most people that rise and fall occurs in relative anonymity, becoming kings of their job or their home, but for others, for those in the spotlight, the whole saga is played out in front of millions.
Such a roller coaster ride has been the life and career of Burt Reynolds. A massive, massive star in the 1970’s with hits such as ‘Cannonball Run’ and ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ as well as critically acclaimed classics such as ‘Deliverance’ Reynolds had star power to spare, as big as any that had come before him and any that came after. It’s difficult for many people to comprehend that stardom because of the decline in his profile. With mediocre movie after mediocre movie as well the rise of new stars such as Tom Cruise, Reynolds’ star was virtually extinguished by the mid 1980’s and has never recovered. That, in part, is the reason that so few people seem to be concerned by Reynolds heart surgery, including it seems the former star himself.
“I’m feeling great now that I have a great motor with brand new pipes. This surgery has been planned for a few months and pretty soon I’ll be up and about just like new,” said Reynolds after the surgery. “I’ve been through an operation or two in my life and while this is one of the tougher ones, I’m tough enough at this point to knock it out of the park. BR will be up and in the movies before you know it.”
It’s not known to whom exactly Reynolds was speaking or who was really interested in seeing him continue his film career, outside the 24 hour nursing agency that is currently taking care of him.
“There was a moment there, a very brief moment,
where it appeared that he might be able to mount a comeback. In 1997, his performance in ‘Boogie Nights’ really showed the old Burt Reynolds once again,
showed modern audiences why this guy was a star but, just like happened before, it all fell apart. He badmouthed the movie and made a whole bunch of bad choices, just like he did the first time,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “If he had managed to mount some kind of comeback, even something like John Travolta’s up and down comeback, he might have had a chance at recovering some dignity and even some enduring affection in his time of need, but he’s used up all his chances, all his goodwill and now, well, this is where things lie.”
Reynolds himself apparently is mildly concerned over his own health status, though it is possible that he’s just putting up a good front, knowing that’s what people might expect of him, if they cared.
“He’s been a couple of movies in recent years that some people have seen, but that’s a far cry from where he was at his prime when he could command audiences all over the world. One might think that this is just the natural result of age and change, but Robert Redford has stayed a star, so did Paul Newman. Clint Eastwood might be a bigger star now than ever, so that logic doesn’t really fly,” continued Temple. “Anyway I hope he gets better, I guess, because that would be good I suppose.”
Reportedly the surgeon wasn’t told who he was working on for fear that he might lose interest.
