DENNIS HOPPER NOT THAT SICK AFTER ALL
May 12 2010
Los Angeles, CA – Dennis Hopper is truly a Hollywood legend. With movies like ‘Easy Rider’, ‘Cool Hand Luke’, and ‘Apocalypse Now’ on his resume he has truly made his mark on the medium of film like few others have been able to do. Add to those
appearances almost universal respect for the man himself and you have a life that most people would envy. Of course even legends have rough times and as Hopper has approached the end of his life, times have gotten truly hard.
This isn’t the first time Hopper has had it rough. He has long credited his months in the jungles of the Philippines for sobering him up and saving his life after indulging in the worst Tinsel Town has to offer. Since that time Hopper has made the best of his second chance appearing in over 100 movies and redeeming his legend for the ages. However, the hard times have returned as Hopper battles prostate cancer and battles with his wife (his fifth) over the details of a bitter divorce. While most assumed that the actor was in his final days, new information from his wife’s lawyer indicates that he may not be as sick as previously believed and might have been using the perception of his imminent death as a negotiation ploy.
“Basically what his wife is saying is that he is not sick enough to stay away from the court and give a deposition. They aren’t debating whether or not he is sick or that his cancer isn’t terminal, at least someday, but that he is embellishing it a little bit for the negotiation,” said an insider. “Everyone saw him at the Walk of Fame thing and he looked really bad but that’s probably because he hasn’t been eating, cancer tends to kill the appetite. What they don’t want is him getting out of obligations because he’s feeling a little under the weather. The cancer is terminal but life is terminal after all.”
Hopper officially retired from acting last year. It’s not clear how much time he may have left. He turns 74 next week.
“Cancer is a rough deal but so is divorce. I can’t speak to this situation myself but my

grandfather died of prostate cancer and it was this long wasting disease that really took a lot out of him. I’m sure Hopper is going through that now so it’s understandable that he doesn’t want to sit in court and give a deposition,” said Scrape TV Legal analyst Gabe Hawthorne. “That said, there are obligations and since he initiated these proceedings he is under special pressure to make sure things go smoothly. Of course if he isn’t really as sick as he has claimed to be then that is something else and that could get him into serious legal trouble. This isn’t like work or school. You can’t fake sick to get out of doing something you don’t want to do. Courts don’t look kindly on that.”
It’s believed that whether he dies of cancer or not Hopper will die someday, just like everyone else.
“From a purely legal standpoint the court does not care whether or not someone is sick. It’s generally accepted practice to have sympathy for someone who is ill and in certain circumstances it is required that the court essentially comes to them but the onus is on that individual to prove they are too sick to answer in court,” continued Hawthorne. “It will remain to be seen what happens here but if he really isn’t that sick then perhaps we will have a few more performances out of him. He’s really been good, in certain movies, and I for one would certainly like to see him on the big screen again. Hopefully this is not just one big fake though, that would certainly hurt people’s impressions of him.”
Thus far Hopper has continued to stay away from court.
