DREAMWORKS CONSIDERING GRITTY SHREK REBOOT
May 25 2010
Hollywood, CA – Though often derided by the adult movie-going community, kids films have made dramatic strides in recent years to appeal to wider and wider audiences. Pixar, the studio behind projects such as ‘Toy Story’, ‘Wall-E’ and last
year’s ‘Up’ have made an art of appealing to both kids and their parents and in the process made a mint. That formula has prompted other studios to attempt the same, to simply make movies not ones that appeal to specific audiences though the majority of those efforts have fallen flat.
One studio that has seemed to captured at least a bit of that magic has been Dreamworks Animation Studio. Though they have certainly had missteps such as ‘The Road to El Dorado’ and ‘Flushed Away’ the studio has managed to bring some major financial and critical success to the big screen. The biggest success for the studio, the film franchise which has carried the rest of the projects, has been green both at the box office and on the silver screen. With four films in the ‘Shrek’ series there is little
doubt that the series has established itself as an enduring cultural icon which appeals to people of all ages. Even icons though have hard times and with a dismal performance at the box office for the latest film in the franchise the studio is considering a radical reinvention of the iconic characters.
“Everyone here is more than disappointed with the first weekend and no one has any real strong hopes that things are going to improve in the coming weeks. It would be silly to say that we are concerned that the film isn’t going to make money but the profits are going to be razor thin and that just isn’t good enough to keep going with new projects,” said a Dreamworks insider. “They want these characters to be like Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny but the reality is with this kind of take we are looking at the end of this particular version of the franchise which is why they are looking at a total revamp that will possibly appeal to a much wider audience.”
Keeping with the current tradition of remakes and reboots, the new version of ‘Shrek’ will likely be much darker and edgier.
“They really want to change things up. They realize that the core audience is aging and they want to bring them back into the franchise, play on their nostalgia a little bit without them feeling like they are going to a kid’s movie. The fans of the first movie are teenagers now so I’m sure they will try to integrate things teens like such as texting and Facebook,” continued the insider. “A reboot is hard to get right but everyone here feels like this particular character is worth the effort and the risk. They just need to get the right people behind the project and I’m sure they will make it a success.”
A spin-off featuring the character Puss in Boots is slated for release next year.
“My first thought would be to bring the franchise to the modern age. The fairytale thing is great and everything but kids today live in a world far removed from that one and I think that would be the starting point for a reboot that could really revolutionize the characters,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Obviously it would have to be a lot darker. Perhaps give Shrek a new villain to fight and maybe something like a drinking problem. Obviously, it will also have to be a lot more violent and way, way sexier. Hopefully they will be able to pull this off and bring the franchise into the modern age.”
The company is reportedly also considering a reboot of the ‘Shark Tale’ franchise which met with little critical acclaim. The reboot will likely feature a much more realistic shark.
