KEVIN SMITH ASKED TO LEAVE FLIGHT AFTER PLANE TILTS DANGEROUSLY TO THE LEFT
February 14 2010
Burbank, CA – The life of Kevin Smith has truly been an embodiment of the American Dream. Struggling through an unsatisfying existence, Smith made a little movie on no money and a lot of spirit that launched a career that is now the envy of thousands,

and even millions. Since the release of that little movie a little over fifteen years ago, Smith has built up a small fortune, a beautiful family, and a fiercely loyal fan base. Though his name will never be mentioned next to greats such as Godard or Kubrick, his workmanlike career has certainly made him and millions of others very happy.
Of course there is such a thing as too happy. Always a big man, recent appearances by the director/writer have showed a growing girth that is rivalling the size of another great filmmaker who got his break at an early age, Orson Welles. That circumference is not unknown to Smith himself who frequently pokes fun at himself, and it was apparently not unknown to the pilot and crew of a Southwest airlines flight. On Saturday, on a flight from Oakland to Burbank, Smith was asked to leave after being deemed a security risk due to his size. While Smith and his loyal fans have already taken up the
cause, the pilot of the plane and the airline are defending the decision, citing a very concerning listing of the aircraft prior to the flight.
“I know I'm fat, but was Captain Leysath really justified in throwing me off a flight for which I was already seated? I flew out in one seat, but right after issuing me a standby ticket, Oakland Southwest attendant Suzanne (last name) told me Captain Leysath deemed me a ‘safety risk’” Smith tweeted on Saturday. “Again: I'm way fat... But I'm not THERE just yet. But if I am, why wait til my bag is up, and I'm seated WITH ARM RESTS DOWN. In front of a packed plane with a bunch of folks who'd already I.d.ed me as ‘Silent Bob’”.
Smith was eventually seated on another plane, another Southwest plane in fact, and was able to land in Burbank safely. He rejected a peace offering from the airline and has now taken to his legions of fans to express his outrage. The airline though has made no official comment.
“I was on the plane and I was little concerned. I couldn’t figure what exactly was going on but it felt like the whole plane was tilted to one side. The passengers were having trouble standing upright and the flight attendants were sort of hanging on for dear life. As soon as he left though everything went back to normal,” said a fellow passenger on the flight who preferred to remain anonymous. “I’m actually a Kevin Smith fan and it was cool that he was on the plane but there was obviously something wrong which just kind of corrected itself once he was off.”
That listing of the craft was corroborated by a number of other passengers.
“The safety of the plane is the first priority of the captain and the crew. Things like embarrassment are the last thing on an captain’s mind. A lot of these planes are older, the shocks are well used, and they just can’t take that additional load. They aren’t rated for that,” said a crew member on the condition of anonymity. “When we finally determined what the cause of the problem was we took steps to correct it. We made the right decision. There are other factors to consider as well such as the ability to actually make it off the tarmac. All in all having that particular passenger was the best choice for the safety of the plane, the passengers, and the crew.”
Following the end of the ordeal Smith was met at the airport by his wife in the family cube truck.
