LADY GAGA SUED FOR HER FIFTEEN MINUTES OF FAME
March 22 2010
New York, NY – Lady Gaga’s recent success isn’t really a surprise. A talented singer, a robust personality, and above the level marketing have all combined to create the phenomenon that is Gaga. Such factors have made stars from the beginning of pop
music. True, Elvis had talent but it was the marketing that brought him fame. From the time when record companies realized that they could create stars rather than just go along for the ride, they have been developing a system to create stars, something which Gaga was perfectly primed to take advantage.
Like all success stories of the past, there are of course troubles for Gaga. Many of the criticisms levelled at her have been largely brushed aside or absorbed into the massive personality that she and her handlers have created. However legal troubles, something all too common with rapid success, are something that even Gaga can’t pull into her bosom. That is exactly what is now facing the singer in the form of a 30 million dollar lawsuit levelled by a former partner and boyfriend who believes he has been shut out of the massive profits she has generated since blowing up in 2008. Filed in Manhattan last week, the suit alleges among other things breach of contract and a not sharing at least a few of her fifteen minutes of fame.
“She stopped paying me royalties. We founded a partnership in 2006 which entitled him to receive 20% of her song royalties. Those earnings dried up after our romantic relationship went downhill and Gaga landed a new contract with Interscope in 2007,” said former producer Rub Fusari. “I’m ecstatic with her success but I want my share. I contributed to the monster that she has become and I deserve a cut, not just because I helped but because we had an agreement. Success is not a licence to steal.”
Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, has countersued Fusari.
“Inevitably something like this was going to happen. Either she screwed him or he is jumping on the opportunity to grab a few dollars and a little bit of the spotlight, but whatever really happened between the two, this type of thing is pretty much standard in the music industry. Fame inevitably brings out predators, leeches, and skeletons,” said Scrape TV Music analyst Dylan Chambers. “Hitting her with this suit at the height of her fame is perhaps the most brilliant move imaginable. Often these types of suits tend to come around on the down slope, once the blood is in the water, but by hitting her at the apex of her fame means that there is a real chance that he could get some cash. It won’t be thirty million, but he will get something and then move on to some new younger wannabe, make some dirty coin, and likely get some action. This is his financing, and his marketing.”
Gaga, according to music officials, is about seven minutes into her run and is unlikely to share it with anyone.
“Even the biggest stars, even someone like Madonna whom Gaga obviously emulates, have fallen. Everyone falls, it’s the way the business works and that will never change. Obviously it’s difficult to split up fifteen minutes of fame in a court of law, but that is for them to negotiate,” continued Chambers. “I’m sure there will be more than enough left for Gaga at the end. She could probably get away with giving him even 30 seconds which would probably satisfy his needs and still give her quite a lot of time in the spotlight. Hopefully it works out for both of them.”
It’s believed that Fusari will at least receive some compensation for having dated Gaga.
