LAW & ORDER PRODUCERS NEGOTIATING DEAL TO KEEP SHOW ON THE AIR UNTIL THE END OF EXISTENCE
April 19 2010
New York, NY – It’s hard to believe that television has only been widely available for a little over fifty years. So fully integrated into popular culture and the day-to-day lives of the billions of people across the planet, television has undoubtedly been one of the

most powerful, if not the most powerful, content distribution media ever created. While the internet will undoubtedly overtake TV in the long term, it was the first medium to become as important as the toaster in people’s homes and for that, its legacy will be secure.
Of course like any medium television has relied on stars to spread its message. Soap operas, sitcoms, and reality shows have all had their place in the limelight but it is the hour long drama that has always been the meat and potatoes of the medium. One of the biggest stars of that particular genre has been ‘Law & Order’ which has dominated the airwaves, alongside spinoff shows, for two decades. Now the producers of that show have apparently entered into negotiations that will keep the program on air for a lot longer, longer in fact than any show ever produced. According to insiders the new deal will ensure that ‘Law & Order will remain on the air for as long as human beings exist.
“To say it’s a blockbuster deal would be a massive understatement. Nothing like this has ever even been considered and now it is very much on the table. Basically, the deal will ensure that for as long as television exists in some form, Law & Order will be on it. It’s an absolutely crazy deal,” said an NBC insider. “It’s not going to be an easy negotiation because TV really depends on ratings and there is no way to ensure that say 200 years from now the show will be earning the ratings it currently does. From what I understand though the financials will take care of that with the producers earning less if the ratings go down.”
It’s not clear when humanity will ultimately meet its demise, though the sun is expected to die in about 5 billion years, ensuring that the show will be on at least that long.
“Right now ‘Meet the Press’ is the longest running television show in history with 61 years in the can but there is no deal in place that ensures that it will stay on for eternity, yet anyway. I’d imagine we will start seeing more of these deals if this particular one does in fact get done,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Of course the producers aren’t necessarily trying to set a record. I’m sure it would be nice but ultimately this is about money, something they will ensure making a lot of if the show does go on until the end of the human species.”
It’s not believed that head producer Dick Wolf has been imbued with the gift of immortality, limiting his potential earnings on the deal.
“I’m sure it won’t be long before they start hunting down criminals in space which would make for a very cool show to be sure. The best thing about this deal, from a creative standpoint at least, is that it will be able to comment on so many aspects of human society. The show has always been topical and I’m sure that won’t change,” continued Temple. “I mean who knows what the future holds but if this deal goes through we know it will include Law & Order. Perhaps that is the closest we will ever come to telling the future.”
True to tradition, the show is expected to make a lot of cast changes through its run to the end of time.
