LINDSAY LOHAN BANNED FROM INDIA, U.S. DOESN’T WANT HER BACK
March 21 2010
Hollywood, CA – For as many tragedies as child stars seem to endure, there are as many successes. For every Dana Plato or Corey Haim there is a Jodie Foster or an Anna Paquin. However, the prominence and familiarity that people feel with many of
those fallen stars, seeing them grow from children to adults, gives us a special level of attention. Even though the sheer number of tragedies is nothing remarkable, our personal connection to those individuals makes their struggles and sometimes untimely end more tragic than such and would ordinarily merit.
The latter has been the ongoing situation with Lindsay Lohan. Making her debut as a precocious 12-year old in the box office hit ‘The Parent Trap’, Lohan’s talent and charisma was obvious. Following that up with hits such as ‘Freak Friday’ and ‘Mean Girls’ Lohan’s career seemed unstoppable at an early age. However, drinking, partying, drugs, and a very public private life have all but drained away that early potential and stardom. Now firmly on the track for one of those tragic stories, Lohan’s sporadic attempts to go straight and make good on her early promise has all but failed, with this dark period now all but eclipsing her potential. Now Lohan has added one more checkmark to her rebellious period, being banned from one of the largest countries in the world, something no child star has ever before been able to accomplish.
“During the course of filming, she visited one of our rehabilitation facilities. She spoke with some children at one of facilities in Delhi for the documentary she was filming. We did not know about her visa status because we were working with the BBC, not her, specifically,” said Bhuwan Ribhu of the Save Childhood Campaign to ABC. “We have heard what she claimed about her efforts here and while we do appreciate her concern and her attention, the simple fact of the matter is the raid she claimed to have been a part of occurred before she had arrived. Her heart was certainly in the right place, but her head was apparently someplace else.”
Lohan recently tweeted that she had personally saved forty children while in India, though she apparently saved none. Her biggest concern however was that she had been working while on a tourist visa, prompting the probable ban from India.
“Young people in Hollywood are primed to get into trouble. At that age most people simply don’t know who they are, they make poor decisions, they are prone to overindulgence. That’s true of older people too, but people in their early twenties don’t have the benefit of learning from failure and mistakes, because they are too busy making them,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “In Hollywood where there is almost unlimited money and access those problems are only exacerbated and that, more than any deep psychological issues or childhood traumas, are the reason we have these sad stories. They have limited ability to control themselves and virtually no reason to try.”
Lohan’s exploits have been media fodder for years, bringing scorn and ridicule.
“The truth is most of these young actors simply cannot afford to travel to countries like India. They spend what little money they’ve earned on drugs and hookers and so travelling abroad is unusual, which makes incidents like this rare. That too skews the results quite a bit,” continued Temple. “The real question is whether or not she will be banned from any other countries. The way she is going it’s really just a matter of travelling to a country and she will be banned. Hopefully, for her sake, she will be allowed back in the US. I don’t think they can ban people born in the country. For Lindsay’s sake at least I hope not.”
Lohan reportedly didn’t want to return to India anyway.
