SOME COUNTRY SINGER SAYS SHE’S GAY
May 3 2010
Nashville, TN – Sexual identity is something with which even the most confident and experienced of us struggle. For something so innate, something bred into the very fibre of our being, sex and sexuality have an inordinate level of control over our
thoughts and feelings, consuming much of our personal resources and causing untold levels of personal trauma. For heterosexual people the challenge of sexuality is tough enough, but for people of different orientation the battle is even more traumatic, affecting virtually every aspect of their lives.
Though there have been times when homosexuality and bisexuality were acceptable – just look at Alexander the Great or the Roman Caesars – the conservatism of the modern world, religious belief tied to social behaviour, has made such things very much taboo. Things have changed much in recent years with more and more famous people embracing their sexuality publicly which in turn has prompted regular people to do the same, many still fear the taboo that has so pervaded modern culture. With marriage between gay people becoming more and more widely accepted, confidence has grown amongst a younger generation who might someday only struggle with the burdens of sexuality with which heterosexuals are challenged. Now one more taboo appears to have been broken, so we’re told, with the announcement that country singer Chely Wright has come out as a lesbian.
“There had never, ever been a country music artist who had acknowledged his or her homosexuality. I wasn't going to be the first. Nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out,” Wright told People magazine amongst other things that most sounded like blah blah blah. Wright also has an autobiography and album coming out, though neither of those things are believed to be gay.
“Frankly I think anytime someone famous comes out it is a good thing. Obviously it does great things for their careers, particularly if they have been faltering, but it also helps to normalize things for regular people. By putting

more and more gayness into the public realm the whole idea becomes sensible and rational which can mean the world to young people. It gives them confidence but also creates and environment that is more conducive to being gay,” said Scrape TV Sexual Identity analyst Maria Kant. “This singer, she’s a country singer right? Well that might or might not be a big deal. Lesbians come out all the time and their might be a bit of cultural fatigue but country music is traditionally conservative which means they really don’t like gay people so her coming out means, well it means something. At the very least better record sales.”
Wright was moderately successful in the 90’s with some hit songs that weren’t worth researching.
“I guess it’s a great thing for her. Going out in public and declaring you sexuality to a bunch of total strangers is a kind of rite of passage for many gay people, both young and old, so she has done that. It’s a good thing she

isn’t a guy though, that would have gone over like a lead zeppelin,” continued Kant. “That would be something wouldn’t it, if one of the members of Led Zeppelin came out as gay. They were infamous for their sexual exploits in their heyday and their music is still really popular so that would do something for the gay community. This one I guess is good for her gay fans. About six percent of the population is gay so this will mean a lot to dozens and dozens of fans. Good for her.”
Fellow country singer k.d. lang came out in the 1990’s but Wright is much hotter.
