WILL FERRELL TO ATTEMPT COMEDY IN NEW FILM ‘THE OTHER GUYS’

March 30 2010

Los Angeles, CA – Throughout the history of art, creators have often grown tired of the path that has led them to success. No matter the field, creative types have always broken with their own traditions, some with great success, some with more than tom hanks oscar
underwhelming results. While the desire to break out and do something new is something virtually everyone dreams of, creative types frequently grow restless much more quickly than regular people, forcing them to seek new and potentially dangerous outlets for their talents.

In the film age, such moves are more common than in any other medium. Frightened about being cast as a single type of performer, or even worse as a single character, actors frequently push their personal boundaries, sometimes bringing their fans with them, sometimes alienating them only to eventually come crawling back to the comfortable and familiar. Comedy actors are the ones most commonly associated with such shifts, hoping to garner some extended respect by appearing in dramatic roles. Success stories such as Tom Hanks and Robin Williams speak volumes to what can be achieved, but those stories are the exception, not the rule, though that doesn’t stop people from trying. Now Will Ferrell is attempting such a switch, though going in the opposite direction, by appearing in a new comedy alongside Mark Wahlberg entitled ‘The Other Guys’.will ferrell

Starring as a pair of mismatched New York City cops, Ferrell and Wahlberg will match wits this August as both actors attempt to break out of their traditional roles. Ferrell, best known for non-comedies such as ‘Step-Brothers’, ‘Semi-Pro’, and ‘Old School’ and Wahlberg, best known for being Marky Mark, undoubtedly face challenges in their transition but both they and the studio behind the picture are hoping that their fans will follow them into this new and bold direction that could potentially bring them a whole new audience and sense of creative satisfaction.

“It’s an interesting move for both of them. For Ferrell, moving into comedy is almost a welcome thing. You can see that he’s got a sense of humour and of course a great deal of natural charisma. Watching some of his interviews you can see that there is this comedy in him. It comes out so natural from him and I’m sure he will be able to translate that to an hour and half,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “As for marky mark funk bunch
Wahlberg, well this is a totally different challenge for him. True, many of his movies have been jokes but they haven’t been funny, at least not in the way they are supposed to be. That isn’t the biggest challenges facing him however. Being on screen and likely being seen by so many people, that is the real challenge for him. People have heard of him and perhaps even seen a movie or two of his, but this is a whole new world for him, one where he will be on the big screen in multiplexes all across the country.”will ferrell smile

Wahlberg’s last big role was in Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Departed’ which many people remember as a hit, though was not.

“While this could mean good things for Wahlberg, the really interesting story here is Ferrell. This could either be a huge success for him or a huge failure. By stepping outside of what he is used to, and what his fans are used to, he could be tanking his career. If it works however, he will step into a totally new realm as player in the comedy world,” continued Temple. “It’s a risky game, he could fall flat on his face. Going from comedy to drama can be embarrassing when it fails, but going the opposite way can be totally disastrous and totally taint a career. Look at Robert DeNiro.”

Ferrell will follow up ‘The Other Guys’ with a turn in ‘Everything Must Go’ based on a short story by acclaimed minimalist author Raymond Carver.
