BARENAKED LADIES APPARENTLY STILL ALLOWED TO PERFORM IN PUBLIC

July 4 2010

Ottawa, Canada – Canada has never been known as musical powerhouse but given the population of the country and their level of influence in the world they have done alright. Past successes such as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, BTO, and Rush led to pop neil young
success in the form of Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Alanis Morissette, Avril Lavigne, and Nickelback. While those later contributions in particular may pale in comparison to contributions such as The Beatles or Elvis Presley, they have certainly made a mark worth noting on the aural landscape of the globe.

For a brief time it was widely believed that another sound was going to be added to that long Canadian tradition in the form of a group of hardly clothed young women, specifically the Barenaked Ladies. The band began in very humble beginnings with members accumulated throughout suburban Toronto. Relentless touring and a few lucky breaks garnered the band some local attention and quickly made them a staple on the tape decks of 13-year old girls across the country. That early success eventually spread and in a few short years the band was making a name for itself not only in Canada but across the border in the United States. Things went well for awhile but eventually success started to fade, relegating the band to nostalgia and fond memories, something the band played up in a Canada Day performance that surprised everyone including local authorities.barenaked ladies performing

“The show was great. We are always happy to be performing for the people of Canada on our birthday. No matter what success we’ve had around the world we are still Canadian boys at heart and we love playing here,” said lead singer Ed Robertson. “Anytime we get on the stage it feels like the old days even though all of us are much older and been through so many things. Being here in Canada reminds of us of our heritage and our love and respect for this country.”

The band was joined onstage by fellow Canadian artists who were apparently unaware that anything illicit had occurred.

“We are currently looking into the situation. We have secured a recording of the barenaked ladies gordon
apparent performance and are now in the process of analyzing it to find any potential infractions. We have always engaged in depth questioning of the musicians involved, the fans at the festival, and the organizers of the concert to further the investigation,” said a spokesperson for the Ottawa police department. “At this point we are not sure if any charges will be laid but it is our understanding according to witnesses that the band ‘Barenaked Ladies’ performed at the concert without securing the proper permissions. While we are sure that everyone enjoyed the Canada Day celebrations we have a responsibility to ensure that all people involved including the musical acts are acting in accordance with the law and will pursue any violations with due diligence.”

The band was legally prohibited from playing in Canadian venues without a special permit by former Prime Minister Paul Martin in 2005.barenaked ladies

“The band was really huge for a long time in their local area and the people there undoubtedly have a great deal of affection for them and their music but that doesn’t give them the right to violate the law. There was a very good reason why they were outlawed and they can’t simply violate that because they choose to do so,” said Scrape TV Legal analyst Gabe Hawthorne. “There are apparently measures in place that allow them to perform in certain circumstances and they would simply have needed to follow those procedures and nothing would have come of it. As it stands now it appears they will be in very serious trouble and could face jail time.”

The band will also be touring the United States, the U.K., and Ireland throughout the summer. They have equally been prohibited from touring in any other countries but those as a result of the Sofia declaration.
