DAVID SPADE STILL HUNGRY FOR AN OSCAR
August 13 2010
Hollywood, CA – For some, the satisfaction is in the work. For others the reward is money and success. Some people crave fame above all else and only engage in work that will further their position. Some people though just want to belong, they crave

the acceptance and camaraderie of their peers and all those other things can go away if they have that. To some degree all creative people crave acceptance from their peers just like ordinary people. As social creatures the drive to belong to a group tends to trump most other concerns.
That has always been the case for David Spade. Never dynamic showbiz personality, never a comic dynamo, Spade has somehow been able to carve out his own place in the world despite built in limitations. It was on ‘Saturday Night Live’ where he cut his chops and where the world first found out about him. Unfortunately he starred alongside comic giants such as Dennis Miller, Mike Myers, and Chris Farley, all overshadowing him. For a time it was in Farley that he found a partner. Their brief pairing had great promise but came an untimely end when Farley passed away in 1997, leaving Spade alone once again. However, he continued to work and has carved out a nice niche for himself but there is still one thing driving him, acceptance from his peers in the form of the coveted Academy Award.
“Anybody in the biz who says they haven’t dreamt of winning the Oscar is a total liar. Everyone I know practiced their speeches in front of the mirror. That’s what you do and I’ve done it many times, even recently. I want that hardware not for its own sake but because of what it means,” said Spade in an exclusive interview. “It means a lot and I know it’s hard for a comic actor to win but it happens. Tom Hanks won it, so did Robin Williams. It can happen it just takes a lot or work and a lot of luck, but I’m a survivor.”
Though he would not disclose details, Spade stated that he had a number of Oscar-worthy projects in the works.
“I know that most people are going to be sceptical but that’s the way the business works. I’ve done this for a few years and I get the ins and outs of the industry and I know it’s going to be a hard climb but I know I can do it. I’ve got all kinds of experience and all kinds of stories to tell,” continued Spade. “Trust me when you see these films and the performances you will understand what I’m talking about. I’m not Robert DeNiro, I know that but my stuff comes from the heart and I know that the people will understand that. I’m not guaranteeing an Oscar, that’s not really not up to me, but I am guaranteeing an Oscar worthy performance in each of those projects.”
Spade’s lack of wit and sarcasm in the interview was apparently due to dental surgery earlier in the day.
“The gap between comedy and drama can be crossed but it is rare. Yes there have been success stories but there have also been a lot of failures. The Academy hasn’t awarded Jim Carrey or Will Ferrell an Oscar. Eddie Murphy tried to get dramatic projects off the ground for years but it hasn’t happened and isn’t likely to happen in the future. There’s this barrier that simply prevents certain people from entering,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Continuing in comedy certainly won’t help. Look at John Candy in ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles’ for example. It’s a heartfelt and dynamic performance that deserved recognition, deserved the award and got nothing. Comedians simply aren’t respected and because Spade isn’t even really respected by other comedians, he is going to have a hard time. Best of luck I suppose. I mean Sandra Bullock won one this year so I guess anything’s possible.”
In his next movie, ‘Hollywood and Wine’, Spade will star alongside Pamela Anderson, Chris Kattan, and ‘Police Academy’ veteran Leslie Easterbrook.
