GRITTY GILLIGAN’S ISLAND REMAKE ON THE WAY

June 18 2010

Los Angeles, CA – When fans of the cult hit television show ‘Battlestar Galactica’ first started to hear rumblings of a revamped version of their favourite series they were understandably excited. Because the original series only aired for one season the battlestar galactica original series
universe that Glen Larson has created barely had time to breathe. With a new visit to that universe fans were suddenly getting the chance to explore the world that had been so cruelly taken from them before its time. The resounding success of the re-imagined series proved those fans hopes correct and helped to spawn the current spate of remakes and reboots overtaking Hollywood.

Of course ‘Battlestar Galactica’ was a small show, beloved by a dedicated yet small group of fans. The same cannot be said for ‘Gilligan’s Island’ which even now, more than forty years after its short run on television ended, is in the hearts and minds of people all across the world. Despite the inherent risks in messing with such a beloved icon, reports show that a re-imagined version of the classic show is now in the works. Though details are scarce at the moment, insiders indicate that the new version of the show will be a complete reengineering of the premise with a much darker and much more realistic take on the premise of castaways on an island.gilligan's island

“Let’s just say that Battlestar is the inspiration for the remake but it’s not going to follow the exact process of that series. ‘Lost’ is also a major inspiration for the series but again it’s not copy that series, just use it as a basis for inspiration. From what I’ve seen of the concept stuff so far it looks pretty good,” said an insider. “All the characters are going to be back, though they will be changed and will be far more realistic. There will also be some new characters introduced. I can tell you that right from the beginning people are going to see the difference right from the beginning. The storyboards for the boat crash are pretty spectacular.”

It’s believed that a number of original cast members have already been contacted about potential cameos, though nothing has been finalized at this point. In late 2009, rumours began to circulate about a big screen version of the show. It’s not clear what happened to those plans.bob denver gilligan

“Obviously the ultimate wish would be to have Bob Denver back but that’s going to be a little tough considering the fact that he’s been dead for five years. From what people have told me though it still might happen, they’ve been talking to his widow about something,” continued the insider. “They are very aware that this is an American icon and that a whole lot of people could get really upset. However they believe that the revamped version of the show will take a lot of people by surprise and appeal to not only younger viewers but also to fans of the classic show. Sure people are going to hate it, but they feel that more people are going to like than not.”

Sherwod Schwartz, the creator of the original series, is consulting on the reboot.gilligans island professor

“Reboots have become something of a joke in recent years for completely valid reasons. They are everywhere and they are taking the place of original content. However sometimes, as was the case with ‘Battlestar Galactica’, or ‘The Thing’, or ‘Scarface’ they improve on the original and that may happen here,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “People are still going to love the original but it is dated. By bringing this into the modern age, they have a real opportunity to do something special. The source material is so strong that they would have to work hard to screw it up.”

It’s believed the show will make its debut sometime next year.
