JADEN SMITH CIRCLING POTENTIAL CATCHER IN THE RYE MOVIE
June 25 2010
Hollywood, CA – There are only a handful of creative works that have truly impacted human culture. Though big movies like ‘Iron Man 2’ and ‘Toy Story 3’ take up much of the popular appeal, and the latest songs from artists like Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber

drive young people crazy, the likelihood that they will have a lasting impact on the world is very slim, no matter how creatively valid they may or may not be. Such acclaim is reserved for a very few works, works that for one reason or another have changed the paradigm of their medium.
The Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, Hamlet, and Beethoven’s Fifth are a few of the rare pieces that have proven themselves over time, spreading their influence across cultures, and remaining popular and relevant centuries after their creation. With the sheer amount of work created in the 20th century it would seem sensible that at least a few of the great works from that century will eventually stand amongst the great works. ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ perhaps, or maybe ‘Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’, or ‘Citizen Kane’ are all candidates for works that may stand the test of time and compel future generations. On that very short list is undoubtedly J.D. Salinger’s ‘The Catcher in the Rye’, one of the most acclaimed and best-selling novels of all time. Now with word that Hollywood studios are starting to circle around the work for translation to the big screen, that status amongst the greats is all but confirmed.
“It’s rally starting up now. Basically everyone was just waiting for him to die, I know how bad that sounds, to start making overtures to the family to try and secure the rights to ‘Catcher’. Basically it’s the death tax which would help make the case for a sale,” said a Hollywood insider. “The reality is he didn’t write very much and so there isn’t a whole lot of money coming in. Once the tax hits it will be a huge burden to his survivors so a quick sale is more than just likely, it’s almost a gurantee.”
Despite the rather placid nature of the book, major Hollywood producers such as Joel Silver and Jerry Bruckheimer are reportedly interested in the work.
“I don’t work for Disney but I have some friends there and apparently Bruckheimer in particular is very interested. He had an assistant read him the book just a few weeks after Salinger died and it apparently really struck a chord with him. Especially after ‘Prince of Persia’ tanked he’s really interested in bouncing back,” continued the insider. “There are a bunch of other guys making noise but frankly its likely going to be the people who pay the most. They’ve looked into the Salinger financials, that’s the way we do things, and they think they can get a really great price. The higher the bid the better the chance.”
The aforementioned Justin Bieber has been rumoured to be interested in the part of Holden Caulfield. Jaden Smith, fresh off the hit ‘Karate Kid’ is also circling.
“It’s an interesting proposition. Many of the great books have been made into movies, some with great success and some with not such aplomb. I mean look at ‘Moby Dick’ and ‘The Grapes of Wrath’. They are great movies from great books. It can be done, it just isn’t done often,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “From the sounds of it though they are looking to change things up, modernize and make it more appealing to a modern audience. The book is sixty years old so that makes sense, you just hope that they will keep to the spirit of the book, even if you see Miley Cyrus as Phoebe.”
Fox is reportedly currently shifting their 2012 summer release slate after taking a mystery meeting in New Hampshire.
