KURT RUSSELL IN TALKS TO TAKE OVER JAMES BOND ROLE

September 16 2010

Hollywood, CA – There is, arguably, no more a venerable or enduring a character in the history of film as James Bond. Since his debut in 1962, Bond has not only been the quintessential spy but also the archetypical action hero that led to the nearly sean connery james bond
invulnerable characters portrayed by stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. Bond was not the first character of this type, but he very quickly became the ultimate expression of the superhero who has continued to influence the medium right through to the modern day.

Bond though has had his challenges, challenges that he seems to keep overcoming, but challenges that at each turn make his fans believe that this may in fact be the end. The most recent attack has been a financial one. The fiscal turmoil at MGM has recently put the brakes on a number of movies including the next Bond adventure which was due to be released next year. Now with no immediate plans many fear the recently reinvigorated franchise may be iced forever. Producers though are hoping otherwise and have already begun throwing around names for a new incarnation of the super spy should Daniel Craig be unavailable once MGM gets its finances in order. At the top of that list is, apparently, a former action star who, like Bond, has been on the outs of late, Kurt Russell.kurt russell big trouble in little china

“It’s more than just talk or chatter, they’ve actually had a couple of conversations with Russell. They realize, they all realize, that this is a total 180 from the direction they have gone in the past but that kind of whole-house renovation is something the producers of the series have always been good at,” said a Hollywood insider. “They have this grand vision for things that is a total revamp of the series that will take it in unique and possibly very interesting directions. It’s about as far from Fleming’s version of Bond as you can get but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”

Russell’s last film was in the barely seen ‘Cutlass’ but is well known for a string of action films in the 1980’s.

“The question really is one of timing. Danny Craig is still under contract and will stay daniel craig james bond
that way for a few years but eventually it’s going to get to a point when the Bond franchise can’t interfere with other projects. There is a feeling that he needs to franchise and after flops like ‘Defiance’ and ‘The golden Compass’ that may be the case but he’s got a couple of big movies on the horizon,” continued the insider. “The Broccolis realize that and need to start making plans for the possibility that he won’t be available or won’t want to do the next film. They believe that Russell could take the franchise in a totally new direction and possibly bring in a whole new audience who are tired of the accent.”

Craig has big name movies such as ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ ‘Cowboys & Aliens’, and the Tintin movie directed by Steven Spielberg on the horizon.

“They have toyed with the idea of using an American in the past and keep in mind that overboard goldie hawn kurt russell
out of five Bonds, Craig is only the second Englishman to play him. It’s wouldn’t be totally out of the norm for a foreigner to play Bond and I’m sure they could pull it off,” continued the insider. “The only factor that concerns me is age. Russell is almost sixty and it has been a long time since he’s played an action star. His body might just keep up, though we did have an older Harrison Ford playing an action hero so you never know. I guess we will have to wait and see. Hopefully MGM can get themselves sorted out one way or the other. I’ve always loved the Bond movies and can’t wait to see a new one.”

Reps for Kurt Russell did not return our calls.
