LAURENCE FISHBURNE GIVES THUMBS DOWN TO DAUGHTER’S FILM DEBUT
August 18 2010
Los Angeles, CA – It is always a rite of passage that children seek or reject the approval of their parents. In most families seeking approval is the norm whether it be in success at school, at work, or in their own family children often strive to please
their parents while at the same time live their own lives. That is especially true when a child chooses to walk in their parent’s footsteps, to travel along the same path. In those cases approval is embedded in the process and is often the most difficult to attain.
That is no doubt the struggle that Montana Fishburne is enduring right now after her recent foray into the industry in which her father, Laurence, has had so much success. Her debut film has met with a great deal of attention, and in many corners acclaim, but apparently none of that is coming from her famous father. While Hollywood legacies are common, from the Barrymore’s to the Fonda’s, and success can be in between rarely do we see the two generations feuding the way the Fishburne’s have been doing. Rarely do we see a father openly criticize the performance of their offspring even if such thoughts are running through their head, as the Oscar nominated elder Fishburne has been doing with his daughter.
“I spoke with him finally and he said ‘I'm not going to speak with you 'till you turn
your life around’. It was really a blow. He said some other mean things too like ‘You embarrassed me’. I really thought he would approve of what I was doing and I still think he will someday but right now things are not great between us,” said the younger Fishburne. “My mother is proud of me but because my Dad works in the same industry I really wanted him to approve. Every girl wants her Daddy to approve but because I followed in his footsteps I really wanted him to approve. He’ll come around, I know he will.”
Fishburne’s debut film has reportedly sold out and a second shipment is currently being processed.
“Laurence Fishburne is undoubtedly a respected and esteemed actor. He’s had popular and critical success his whole career which is now in its third decade and that is nothing to sneeze at. He spent years building a career and a resume that many people would be envious of so it’s totally understandable that when his daughter has success right off the bat he would get a little jealous,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “It doesn’t look good though. I mean anytime a parent gets jealous of their children it’s pretty ugly and when it’s played out in public, it’s even worse, especially for someone who commands so much respect. I’m sure things will eventually work out and the two will make peace but the damage to his public reputation might be permanent. Hopefully not, he’s earned his success.”
Fishburne was Oscar nominated for his performance as Ike Turner in ‘What’s Love Got to do With It?’. Other major films include ‘Boyz ‘n the Hood’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’.
“We may never know the details of his disapproval. Maybe it was her performance, maybe it was the choice of material. Frankly either way it’s not really fair, I mean Laurence has made some bad choices in his career as well so he should be a little understanding. This is her first film after all,” continued Temple. “I’m sure she will get stronger roles in better films but this has to shake her confidence. Hopefully he won’t go so far was to use his considerable influence to prevent her from getting better parts, that would be really unseemly.”
Montana Fishburne has not yet made her future plans clear but is reportedly considering a number of different offers.
