WORLD RESTS EASY AS DENISE RICHARDS FINALLY RETURNS TO ACTING
July 8 2010
Hollywood, CA – Think way, way back to 1997. Bill Clinton was just starting his second term, the followers of Heaven’s Gate committed mass suicide, Princess Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris, and Denise Richards finally broke through into the

mainstream. While that year had many memorable moments it likely won’t be regarded as one of the most important periods in human history but for some it was a big deal. Marriages were had, children were born, and loved ones passed away making it a memorable year for many.
When Denise Richards accepted the role of Carmen Ibanez in the long awaited big screen adaptation of the classic SF novel ‘Starship Troopers’ it’s unlikely that she believed it was anything special. At 26 Richards was a Hollywood journeywoman who had spent the better part of a decade in television and direct-to-video features that few people saw. Even though ‘Troopers’ had a big budget and a high profile director in Paul Verhoeven (the director of ‘Robocop’ and ‘Basic Instinct’) years of unrequited dreams would have seemed to likely to continue, especially after the underwhelming box office success of the film. However that picture exposed Richards to a wider world and snagged her roles in hits like ‘Wild Things’ and ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’ and as a Bond girl in ‘The
World is not Enough’, making it the breakthrough she had been waiting for all those years. Now a decade removed from that heyday Richards is finally working her way back into the spotlight with a recurring role on the Spike TV show ‘Blue Mountain State’.
“We are very excited to have Denise on board. We’ve been having a great time filming the show and now by adding a major star like Denise to the cast we have a good chance of continuing that fun and success for a while to come,” said producer Chip Hall. “Plus, having someone of her calibre in the cast will give a new creative spirit to the whole production and allow us to explore the world in a totally new way. We are thrilled to have her aboard.”
It’s not clear what role Richards will play on the College based show but it’s believed unlikely that she will be a professor.
“Obviously she hasn’t been out of the spotlight completely over the last few years being married to Charlie Sheen for a while and all but her career just kind of stalled. She’s been in a few movies that no one has seen which is really sad considering her level of talent and sheer on-screen charisma,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “She wasn’t dead but it still felt we had lost someone like James Dean or River Phoenix or more recently Heath Ledger, like we had lost someone just as they were about to break through and become a huge star. That would have been tragic, truly tragic but finally we have her back.”
Richards’ last major role was in ‘Scary Movie 3’ which people went to see.
“It will be interesting to see whether or not her skills have faded. Being away for so long it’s entirely possible that the incredible spark she had in those early performances might be lost but we will have to wait and see. I think she’ll have been able to retain some of that, but hopefully it’s all there,” continued Temple. “The best thing in the world, the thing Hollywood really needs is a strong female presence and Richards has proven that she can provide that and hopefully will show the world what great acting is really like.”
Richards was reportedly researching her character through colouring books.
