CHRISTOPHER NOLAN OVERSEEING GRITTY REBOOT OF POLICE ACADEMY FRANCHISE
October 26 2010
Los Angeles, CA – There is little doubt that the 1980’s were a more innocent time. The neon and hairspray induced euphoria that so consumed the decade was of course merely a pop culture event and reflected little of what happened in that decade, truly
one of the more turbulent decades of recent times. Wars, corruption, deadly plagues, and massive political and economic upheaval were the headlines of the decade, but little of that was evident in the pop culture that has come to define the era.
While not one of the most popular cultural touchstones of the decade, the ‘Police Academy’ series nonetheless was very much a product of its era and something that for a certain group helped to define the decade. With a cast of eccentric and bumbling characters, beset by a largely docile criminal plague in and unidentified American city, the series reflected little of what was actually going on in the country at the time, something producers are looking to change. Amidst the current Hollywood reboot trend there comes word that Warner Brothers has tapped Batman director Christopher Nolan to revamp the classic series, bringing it into the modern era, and giving a grittier and more realistic feel that will better reflect the realities of life on the mean streets.
“A lot of the people in the company now grew up watching the original series of films
and so they have a great connection with the material. Even so, they realize that there are a lot of elements that simply don’t reflect the reality of the world, either the world of today or the world in which they are created, and they want to change that,” said a Warner Brothers insider. “It’s become a real priority for the studio recently but they are having trouble locking a script. There are a couple of guys, Ben and Guy, who are really pushing the reboot and they developed the core ideas for the redo but they are simply trying to get a script that everyone likes together. With Chris Nolan overseeing things we know it can work”
The original series revolved around a ragtag group of police recruits who eventually become full-fledged officers. The series spawned seven films as well as live action and animated TV show, the latter of which went off the air in 1998.
“We have all these old properties that people have either forgotten about or could simply be done another way and Police Academy is really at the top of the list. It’s such rich material and has so much potential that we really feel that with a different perspective it could be really successful,” continued the insider. “There is no timetable yet, no official one, but they would like to get the first film in theatres by 2013, likely a summer release. We’d really like to see what Nolan can do with this material. It’s going to be an awesome summer I can tell you.”
The original series launched the careers of such notable actors as Steve Guttenberg, David Spade, Sharon Stone, Kim Cattrall, and of course David Graf.
“Everyone feels that things went a little off the rails by the end. I mean they stopped

short of sending the cast into space, though just short. That won’t happen this time around. The plan is to return them to the tough city and bring the reality of that life to the big screen, with of course a little humour and a dash of sexiness,” continued the insider. “Nolan has a lot going on right now but he is giving real energy to the project. Once Superman and Batman are further along I’m sure he’ll be more actively involved but things are really going along swimmingly.”
The insider confirmed that the principal villain will indeed be fan favourite Captain Harris.
