DELETED VERSION OF IRON MAN 2 TO HIT DVD NEXT YEAR
September 30 2010
Hollywood, CA – Two years ago a film hit movie screens and took the community by storm. Such things happen on occasion as was evidenced by the recent success of ‘Avatar’. Occasionally creative products hit the public in deep and profound ways,
becoming the water cooler talk for a generation, and in the process help to renovate their industry. The release of ‘Iron Man’ did exactly that in the summer of 2008, grabbing the public’s attention in ways few comic book movies had done before and in the process reinvigorated the genre.
That movie was one of the few genre releases that was truly able to capture a wide spectrum of audience members, engaging men and women, adults and children in equal ways. In many ways the movie was a watershed moment, a piece that achieved almost universal good will in the way few movies have done lately. Because of that the release of the second film was one of the most anticipated in recent years and though it became a huge financial hit, ‘Iron Man 2’ was a disappointment for many with poor reviews and scathing fan response. Both the filmmakers and the studio were undoubtedly aware of those concerns which have apparently prompted them to make plans to release an entirely alternate version of the film sometime next year.
“Basically this release is the beta version of the film. It was the one the studio wanted and they get what they want. No one was happy with the response though and s once they make their dollars off the initial version of the movie they do plan on releasing the other movie which they shot at the same time,” said a Marvel insider. “Like most movies they shot multiple versions of scenes but with this one they had a totally different script, different actors and a radically different plot line. It’s not essentially a different movie, it’s a totally different movie and it’s a good one.”
Robert Downey Jr. does appear as the lead character in the alternate version, but some actors were replaced such as was the case with Don Cheadle who was replaced by original actor Terrence Howard.
“Often you have things like director’s cuts and other alternate versions of films but rarely do we see entirely different films being released. I suppose it’s happened before but usually studios won’t admit their mistakes in such public ways. Iron Man is perhaps different because it is such an important property for the studio and so they wanted to ensure that both versions were released,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “Iron Man is the leader of this new vanguard of films from Marvel and is the principle lead up to The Avengers which will be out in a few years. That makes it a very important IP for the studio and one they need to ensure is healthy.”
‘The Avengers’ is due in 2012 and will feature multiple Marvel characters including Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, and Thor.
“Basically, they screwed up the movie. They know that and like New Coke before them they are ready to admit their mistakes, ask for forgiveness, and hopefully have everyone move on. Ultimately forgiveness works best for everyone and makes fans and bean counters happy,” continued Green. “It really did seem like a misstep with that movie for a lot of reasons but hopefully this new version will redress those concerns for all involved. I’m looking forward to it personally; I really liked the first one.”
The studio is also currently shooting and alternate version of Captain America in anticipation of that one sucking as well.
