DOUG MISSES OUT ON SEXIEST MAN ALIVE AGAIN
November 17 2010
Grand Chute, Wisconsin – Sex appeal is one of the great mysteries of the human condition. One person’s ugly is one person beautiful, yet certain traits remain common throughout the world. There is never complete agreement on beauty or sex appeal,
yet people spend their entire lives trying to attain this vague goal that is, ultimately, never achievable. No one standard exists and so no one look can ever truly appeal to everyone.
Some people sure try though. Case-in-point is Wisconsin native Doug Weathers who for more than a decade has been advocating his case for People magazines sexiest man alive, a title generally reserved for celebrities. While not an official title that holds any kind of real power, the award has been one of the most sought after in a town built on awards. Doug though has long been fighting for the little man, fighting for the commoner trying to achieve the unachievable. Once again though, Doug has been thwarted in his efforts to attain that elusive title after the announcement that Ryan Reynolds has been selected for the honour. Doug though remains undaunted and vows to continue the fight for as long as he is able, determined to grace the cover and become a symbol of sexiness for the entire world.
“Every year it’s a celebrity and I don’t debate that many celebrities are attractive, but there are ordinary people that are just as attractive. I think it’s totally unfair that certain types of people are chosen and others are ignored simply because of their station in life. In many ways it is prejudicial and totally unfair,” said Doug from his home. “It would certainly be difficult to go all over the world and see every single man every year to get the title right, but they don’t even try. Every single year they choose from a small group of celebrities and while they should certainly be contenders, there are probably people out there who are far more attractive, or at least on par.”
‘Sexiest Man Alive’ began in 1985 and only one person, John F. Kennedy Jr., was not an actor.
“I mean there are a few people that have been chosen twice. I mean seriously, there had to have been other people out there in those years that could have taken those slots but instead they went with someone they had already chosen. That proves they are taking from a very limited group,” continued Doug. “I really think that I have the goods to make it. I may not be the sexiest person on the planet but someone needs to break through and grab that title for the little guy. Maybe once one person breaks through they will start to expand their search, open up their horizons and start a search for the person who truly is the sexiest man alive. I’m not doing this for myself, I’m doing it for whoever he is.”
At 38, Doug still feels he has many good years ahead of him. The oldest selectee was Sean Connery in 1989. He was 59 at the time.
“At its core this feature is merely a selling point for a magazine. It’s a way to move copies. Every magazine, every news show, they need to create features that draw people in. That’s the way they sell magazines and this feature is nothing other than that,” said Scrape TV Media analyst Sarah Piper. “This is really not a statement on who is the best or the sexiest or anything like that. Such a statement would be so difficult to prove that it would be a fool’s game trying to resolve it. The simple fact of matter is people like celebrities, they sell magazines, and that’s the way it’s going to be for the foreseeable future whether Doug likes it or not.”
Doug does not like it.
