FAILURE OF YOGI BEAR MOVIE INDICATES HARD TIMES AHEAD FOR TALKING ANIMAL MOVIES
December 28 2010
Hollywood, CA – Humans and animals have always lived together in one way or another. In the early days of human civilization other animals were one of two things, prey or predators. Whether we desperately sought out sustenance or ran for our lives

from sharps claws and teeth, humans and animals have always been locked in step together. Eventually as we advanced more and more we started to gain control over the other animals of the planet, keeping beasts at bay and domesticating food supplies. In the midst of that though we gained an affection for those animals and at some point started to keep pets.
For most people pets are members of the family, beloved animals that take on almost human characteristics and affection. We love our pets, we even converse with them despite them not being able to talk back. While we will never truly know what animals think of us, if they truly think anything beyond food and comfort, many a pet owner has imagined what exactly it would be like to have a conversation with their pet. Never one to miss an opportunity, the dream machine of Hollywood has long explored the concept of talking to and with animals, a genre that in recent years has enjoyed great success but be now be undone by the recent failure of the Yogi Bear movie.
“This is really a much bigger deal than people realize. Outsiders may just look at this as a bad movie that deserves to fail but it really has a lot of people in Hollywood shaking in their boots. They are really nervous that this could be the end of a really good run and that always worries the suits,” said a Hollywood insider. “I mean The Garfield movies did pretty well but it was the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies that really sent things into the stratosphere. Much like ‘Avatar’ did for 3-D, those movies, the Alvin movies sent the genre into the big time but all that is now in peril.”
Combined the two ‘Alvin and the Chipmunk’ movies grossed over $800 million.
“There is a deep fear, much like was felt with ‘Clash of the Titans’ back a few months ago, that the glut of product and inferior movies will undo all the good will that has been created. That one bad movie in this genre will taint all the other movies and remove a major cash cow and an emerging market,” continued the insider. “People are a little angry at Warners for doing this, much like they were with the whole Clash thing even though they realize that there was little that could have been done. Sure the movie stinks but most of these movies aren’t very good. Most of the time they are critic proof but kids just weren’t interested in the property and no one could really have anticipated that.”
Yogi Bear has been one the most enduring cartoon characters in history after first appearing in 1958.
“There is another Alvin movie coming next year, in 3-D, and that will help tell the tale but the failure of the movie, if nothing else, shows that the market is limited and there may be little room for competitors, especially now that there has been this massive misfire,” continued the insider. “The studios are going to be very hesitant in the next few years in this genre. They will have to walk on eggshells for a little while but hopefully they will be able to come out on top. I frankly don’t think this will be the end of talking animals in the movies, but they will have to be cautious moving forward.”
‘Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole’ was released in September to an equally poor reception.
