HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN NAILS NEW ROLE AS A PLANK OF WOOD
December 5 2010
Toronto, Canada – Hollywood is a town of unlikely stories and many of those tales, maybe most of them, never make it to the silver screen. As the house of dreams for millions, Hollywood thrills, disappoints, destroys, and sometimes embraces the wildest
dreams of young people who follow their personal vision of success and glory. Those are the stories upon which the town is built, stories that often go untold but rather lived, inspiring and frightening new generations of dreamers.
Every story is of course a personal story. Each tale has elements of mystery, passion, determination, faith, and luck, even those which fail to live up to their imagined heights. Every story is dramatic when told in perspective, but often it is only the success stories which capture people’s imaginations, bringing life to their own passions. Such a success story was one lived by Hayden Christensen who after years of appearing in small Canadian productions was plucked from relative obscurity to portray perhaps the greatest villain in history in one of the most anticipated movies ever made. While the movies, and his performances, received mixed acclaim, it was clear to many that the young actor had a future, a future that has of late seemed dismal. Nonetheless, the actor has persisted and after a recent change of agents is determined to become the star of his dreams, starting with a role as a simple plank of wood.
“Hayden fully realizes that things haven’t gone exactly to plan. He’s mostly happy with the choices he’s made in recent years but for one reason or another those projects just haven’t touched people in the ways he had hoped,” said an insider. “That is really his objective. The money, the fame, all those things are really secondary. He wants to have success because he wants to engage people. That’s the reason he got into this in the first place and the reason he has continued. He wants to make people’s lives better.”
Christensen’s biggest post-Star Wars success was in the action-adventure film ‘Jumper’.
“He really feels now like he is starting to think outside the box. He feels a different connection to his art and to the nature of film in general and that is what prompted this change of agencies and

his pursuit of these new and dynamic roles. He really wants to carve out a new niche, a new way of telling stories and of acting and all his decisions are starting to reflect that,” continued the insider. “This role has been a much buzzed about one for a number of years but it has remained in turnaround for a long time. No actor really nailed the performance in rehearsals and many felt that it was perhaps un-filmable. Hayden though felt differently and after all kinds of research has pretty much nailed this role as this piece of wood, so-to-speak. He really feels that this will be the breakthrough he has been waiting for.”
Christensen’s most acclaimed role has probably been as a coma victim in ‘Awake’.
“I have to admit that when I first saw Christensen I was not impressed. He seemed a little stiff and a little mechanical. He certainly could carry the screen and he certainly had charisma, but he just didn’t seem to have the chops to be a big actor,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “After I saw him as the coma victim my attitude changed. There have been few performances like that I have seen in recent years. The way he just laid there saying nothing was really remarkable. I mean we aren’t talking Academy Award material but you could certainly see the potential. I think he would perform miracles as a plank of wood and I can’t wait to see the movie.”
Fellow Canadian Keanu Reeves was reportedly interested in the role but he was deemed to old for the part.
