LARRY KING ROBOT EXITS GRACEFULLY TO THE TRASH HEAP

December 17 2010

New York, NY – For a quarter of a century Larry King has been a familiar face on television screens across the world, a face that has become synonymous with the casual and easy talk show that has created moguls such as Oprah Winfrey and Ellen larry king live
DeGeneres. Like all things, the show has finally come to an end, marking the final chapter in a long and distinguished career that started over fifty years ago in a small radio station in Miami.

In the end King was undone not by his stature or his experience or any kind of scandal, the type of thing his show built its success on, but by the changing nature of his audience and the medium of television in general. At 77, it was inevitable that his audience was going to move on and younger viewers would eventually just drift away, exactly what they did. Still, King’s legacy as the iron horse of broadcasting remains true as evidenced by the cavalcade of guests on his final show featuring prominent politicians, celebrities, and respected journalists. While King’s form of journalism was most certainly his own, the end of his show still marked the end of an era for the medium in general, something his mechanical brain may well be contemplating as it is retired on the rubbish heap at a local recycling facility.larry king smiling

“It's sad but there's a time to go. You know when it's time. I have no complaints against CNN. It's been a hell of a marriage. This is not a divorce,” said King on his final show. “When I started twenty-five years ago at a little studio in Washington D.C., I never thought it would ever last this long or come to this so I’m going to do a lot of other things...So you’re not going to see me go away but you're not going to see me on this set anymore. I don’t know what to say except to you, my audience, thank you and instead of goodbye, how about so long.”

‘Larry King Live’ began airing in June of 1985. King will host occasional specials for CNN. larry king

“It certainly has been an interesting run for King. I mean with his demeanour and onscreen presence it would at first glance seem like the odds would be so stacked against him that he wouldn’t even have gotten on TV, never mind been so successful. I mean we can debate back and forth whether or not this is the original Larry King but regardless of that, his presence has sustained interest,” said Scrape TV Media analyst Sarah Piper. “His run is probably the last of its kind. That form of media is very much on the way out and it’s unlikely that anyone will ever be able to last that long or be that influential ever again. He’s very much a relic of and tribute to a bygone era.”robot

Piers Morgan will be taking over King’s old timeslot in January.

“Now the old parts will be able to rest for a little while. Sure, they’ll pull him off the trash heap every now and then, but those gears and cranks have got to be getting old and I’m sure they will appreciate a rest, at least for a little while. Eventually they will go the recycling heap for good,” continued Piper. “I guess the question is really just how many Larry Kings the company has lying around. I know a few of them were destroyed in the late 1990’s and one was sacrificed after 9/11 but it’s a matter of how many they decided to build and how many are still left. Hopefully this isn’t the last one, or if it is, who cares? Judging by his recent viewership, people don’t.”

At least four Larry Kings were spotted in a Los Angeles metal recycler over the weekend.
