MICHAEL JACKSON TO BE RESURRECTED FOR MOVIE VERSION OF THRILLER
October 29 2010
Hollywood, CA – It can never be said that Hollywood lacks inventive ways to exploit old properties. The recent flourish of remakes, sequels, and adaptations notwithstanding Hollywood has always explored most of its creativity through the
creativity of others. Even early legendary films such as Dracula and Gone with the Wind are adaptations of popular books. The Maltese Falcon was not only adapted from a novel, but was also made into a movie a decade earlier making it, arguably, the first reboot in movie history.
While much criticism has been levied against producers for lack of originality, the reality of Hollywood story telling is that it has always relied on other stories. On a larger scale one could argue that even original stories in film are often a direct result of the work of other people, that the formula for drama, comedy, or gangster movies have been well established and every new project is simply following that formula. Because of that tendency to mine old material for modern tales it perhaps makes perfect sense that Hollywood has finally looked to one of the most successful artists of all time from which to draw inspiration, Michael Jackson. Following his death last year, the subsequent surge in popularity that created, it makes sense that his seminal work, Thriller, is now on the slate for translation to the big screen with, apparently, a resurrected Jackson as the star once more.
"Michael Jackson, who reportedly earned $275 million posthumously over the past year for his estate, isn't slowing down anytime soon. I'm told that GK Films is in active negotiations to acquire a package for a film that is being fashioned around his groundbreaking hit song Thriller,” reported Deadline Hollywood. “he film, which has been quietly shopped over the past several weeks by Real Effects Entertainment, has Kenny Ortega attached to direct, and The Hangover scribe Jeremy Garelick to write the screenplay.”
A number of studios are apparently vying for the rights to the picture, though the issue of resurrection is apparently causing a lot of internal turmoil.
“It’s a tough sell for everyone. On the one hand it would be a huge box office smash but inevitably you would have people complaining about the sanctity of life and having
respect for the dead and that may be too much controversy for any studio to absorb. Because it is Jackson that noise is going to be very loud and it could scare people away,” said an insider close to the negotiations. “The other issue, and one that could really scuttle the deal, is the fear that any reanimated corpse simply would be too difficult to work with, never mind Michael Jackson’s. The reality is he didn’t work a whole lot in his later years and it was very difficult to keep him on task, something that is going to be a lot tougher when there are all these healthy brains around to eat. They really fear that things could go off the rails very easily and that is causing hesitation.”
Jackson is currently being housed in a mausoleum in Los Angeles, likely awaiting his return to the spotlight.
“This would be, without a doubt, the perfect vehicle for a return. Aside from Thriller being his ultimate work, the content is just note perfect for this kind of thing. I really can’t imagine a better scenario for this return but there are a lot of questions to be answered,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “I’m sure if they have a script and have been actively seeking a deal that they have the whole resurrection technology worked out but that is only the start of the questions. Will his body continue to decay as the filming progresses? Will he be kept animated afterwards? Will he be able to see his children? There are a lot of questions, but if they can be answered I will be there day one.”
Jackson’s co-star in the Thriller video, Vincent Price, will not be returning. His body was cremated after his death in 1993.
