QUESTIONS ABOUND AFTER OPRAH DENIES BEING A LESBIAN
December 9 2010
Chicago, IL – The success of Oprah Winfrey has been nothing short of amazing. Born into poverty, sexually and emotionally abused, Oprah could very well have become another number in a long list of statistics. Fate and talent felt otherwise
however and Winfrey went from what should have been a drab and sad life and became a titan. Her story is very much the embodiment of the American dream, the fantasy that with enough talent, hard work, and luck, that anything can be accomplished. While that story is not played out by many, it was most certainly played out for Winfrey in remarkable ways.
Of course, almost all of that tale has been played out in public. Winfrey’s success and story has been very much one seen, embraced, and created by her adoring public. Even with that, much of Winfrey’s private life has remained private, something truly remarkable in today’s media frenzied world. Though it is well known that she has been with her partner Stedman Graham for the better part of two decades, tongues continue to wag at their lack of marriage or even appearance of a close relationship. That has often resulted in a lot of speculation regarding her relationship with friend Gayle King and whether or not the two are in fact lesbians, something Winfrey vehemently denied recently, prompting many to question why she’s protesting so forcefully.
“She is the mother I never had. She is the sister everybody would want. She is the friend that everybody deserves. I don't know a better person. I don't know a better person. It's making me cry because I'm thinking about how much I probably have never told her that. Tissue please. I now need tissue. I've never told her that,” Winfrey told Barbara Walters. “I'm not a lesbian I'm not even kind of a lesbian. And the reason why it irritates me is because it means that somebody must think I'm lying. That's number one. Number two why would you want to hide it? That is not the way I run my life.”
Winfrey and King have been friends since working at a small television station in the 1980’s.
“Sexual identity is still a major issue for a lot of people, particularly older people who grew up with a stigma and have never been able to fully shed it. For some people they have spent their entire lives hiding certain aspects of their life and personality and it can be very difficult to let go of that. It becomes lifestyle,” said Scrape TV Sexual Identity analyst Maria Kant. “I can’t comment specifically on Winfrey because I have never spoken with her or studied her extensively, but it is common for closeted women to form strong bonds with other women and to keep men at arm’s length. This happens very frequently even if there is nothing actually going on between the two women.”
Winfrey and Graham have been engaged since 1992 but have never married.
“That does not mean that straight women cannot have close relationships with other women and there are often cases where that occurs without men in the picture, though most often that is between siblings. What used to be called spinsters,” continued Kant. “The fact that Oprah has to come out and protest this at all is really a shame. We have made so many strides in recent years regarding the normalization of sexuality that the fact that anyone has to hide who they are is truly sad. Oprah should not have to answer these questions, though the fact that she is willing to, and to do so with such passion, well that doesn’t say anything specifically, but sometimes smoke can become fire. However that isn’t for me to say.”
Winfrey and King recently went on a camping trip without Graham.
