SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE TO ATTEMPT COMEDY SKITS AGAIN
December 6 2010
New York, NY – When ‘Saturday Night Live’ first appeared in television in 1975 it became a cultural revolution. It wasn’t just the comedy, it wasn’t just the live nature of the show. After all, those things had been done since the beginning of television.
‘SNL’ was something else, it gripped the public in an entirely new way and engaged a new type of counter-culture that resonated with rebellious youth and those still young enough to remember rebellion. Aside from the sheer brilliance of its comedy, and its early stars, ‘SNL’ helped to redefine American culture as a whole.
Of course, that was a long time ago. The show’s grip on the public’s imagination has certainly continued in the subsequent years and produced a number of major stars such as Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers who in turn have helped change the entertainment landscape. Still, the influence has been largely diminished. No longer the revolutionary icon of counter culture, ‘SNL’ has in many ways become an icon for a culture long past with fans both young and old longing for the good old days. While some of that demise certainly has to do with the pool of talent and some of has to do with the switch from rebel to oligarch, the show has certainly strayed far from its roots, something producers are looking to change by introducing comedy skits into the programming schedule.
“Over the last few weeks we’ve been throwing in a few jokes here and there and it has been eliciting a positive response from the audience and that has given us hope that maybe there’s still some juice left in the old girl and that fans really haven’t become as jaded as we had feared,” said a show insider. “This has given us the confidence to throw in a few more jokes and even full comedic skits, something we had abandoned a long time ago when audiences stopped reacting. We think this is going to do really well for us.”
The show last experimented with comedy in the early 1990’s but poor response resulted in a return to simply filming people walking around the stage.
“Back in the early days the show played with comedy a lot and there was a great deal of success. I can’t tell you how many times a day I hear people say that the show was so much better in the early days. They’ve tried going back to that occasionally but audiences just didn’t seem to respond,” continued the insider. “Obviously the world is different now and I think with all the stresses out there in the world people just want to have a good time and we want to provide them with that. We are going to overload the show with comedy at least not right at the beginning but we feel that this is the right track to be on and we hope it will result in success for the show for a number of years to come.”
The show is expected to retain much of its existing talent for the short term.
“I grew up watching the old cast of ‘Saturday Night Live’ and I can tell you that even as a youngster you could tell it was doing something different. Every time I’ve tuned in since that time I’m totally amazed that the thing is still on the sir. It’s like a totally different show,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “I’d like to see comedy on the show again. That was what they did so well in the old days and it would be nice to see them return to those roots but we will have to see whether or not it works. I still don’t think it will be as good as the old days.”
A poll showed that dozens of fans were in support of the new format.
