STEPHEN KING ADMITS EVEN HE HASN’T READ HIS NEWEST BOOK
November 5 2010
Bangor, ME – There was a time, quite a long time, when there was no bigger literary force in the world than Stephen King. During his peak years through the late 1970’s and the late 1980’s King was everywhere. His books sold millions of copies, film
adaptations were blockbusters success’ and the man himself had become fully integrated into pop culture in ways that no author before had ever been before. One could argue that King was the biggest celebrity literature has ever seen and the biggest it ever will see.
While authors such as J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer certainly fall into the form of the celebrity author, their success has been largely based on specific works, series that fans follow. With King it was the man himself that fans followed no matter what he wrote, allowing him to delve into horror, science fiction, and even simple drama. King’s name emblazoned on the cover of a book or a movie poster drew fans, a lot of them. Things have certainly changed since that peak with King’s output slightly reduced and his popular appeal not nearly at the levels it once was. While such erosions are common in popular culture it as an unusual spot for King but he has not let it get him down, or
stopped him from writing, as evidenced by his latest work ‘Full Dark, No Stars’ which even the author admits he hasn’t read.
“I’m really happy to have this book out. It’s a collection of four novellas that I think people are really going to enjoy. I’ve always enjoyed working in the novella format which I haven’t been able to do on many occasions,” said King in an exclusive interview. “Like all of my stories the tales here will engage, amuse, and hopefully horrify readers. I’ve tried very hard to keep the kind of edge that was present in my other novella collections and I think readers will be very happy with the final product.”
‘Full Dark, No Stars’ will be released on November 9 in both standard and Limited Editions.
“Like the other collections there are four tales in this book, tales that explore the same kind of dark realms that have always compelled me
and my fans. I’m very excited to bring readers back into this world that I have
personally loved for so long. I’m sure they will enjoy taking my hand as we walk down this path one more time,” continued King. “I’d like to go into more detail about the stories but I don’t want to ruin the surprise. Also, I frankly haven’t read the stories myself. Often the stories just flow through me and I occasionally forget details, especially as a I get older. I’ve always seen myself as more of a vessel rather than a creator and consequently there is no real need to read my own books. I haven’t actually read on in almost a decade, but I still think fans will enjoy reading this one.”
King did say that he had strong memories of ‘Dreamcatcher’ though admits that may have been a result of viewing the movie. He believes the last book of his own that he read was ‘Hearts in Atlantis’ which he found disappointing.
“For many younger fans Stephen King is just a name, just a title on the books but for a long time he was far more than that. His fame went well beyond his stories and he had become a real cultural icon and even though much of that has been lost in recent years, his impact remains and likely will for a very long time,” said Scrape TV Literary analyst Samuel Lee. “That said, his work over the last fifteen years has been largely unreadable. At his peak his stuff was lean and mean and roared off the page but after a little while he started to just produce novels at ridiculous lengths with much of it superfluous content. That has made his stuff unreadable so it makes sense that he’s not reading his own stuff. I personally haven’t read anything since ‘Insomnia’ and that was a herculean effort I can tell you.”
A four stories in the new collection were apparently written within the last ten years.
