TOM CRUISE AND LOUIS GOSSETT JR. TO REUNITE IN TOP GUN 2
October 17 2010
Hollywood, CA – It was 1986. Madonna and prince topped the pop charts, the iron curtain still stood strong in the East, and one man became the most popular movie star in the world. 1986 would be the year that Tom Cruise would break through into

the realm of superstardom and Hollywood legend, and all of that on the success of a single film, the now legendary ‘Top Gun’. Possessing the cool and grace that helped maintain his stardom for years, Cruise’s performance in that film carried the project and his career far into the danger zone.
Things have certainly changed for Cruise, as things do, and while he is still a major star, his light has dimmed in recent years. Whether a result of personal eccentricity or just the passage of time, Cruise is no longer the world beater he once was but he still has cache, and a connection to the wild days of his youth. That is no more evident than it is in the announcement that a sequel to the legendary film is now in development, a project that will certainly go a long way towards restoring some of Cruise’s lost panache, as well as reuniting him with fellow forgotten star Louis Gossett Jr.
"We tried to develop a sequel and we couldn't do it-- I was with my partner Don Simpson and then Tom took it over and he tried to develop something and it never quite happened. We were recently approached again to start talking about it but, you know, nothing yet,” said ‘Top Gun’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “We kicked around some ideas because the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it, which we feel we have now been able to do. There’s still a long way to go and we need to make sure that this is the right way to go, but we feel very confident that this thing is going to happen.”
It’s believed that Cruise’s role will be much smaller in the sequel, likely as a flight instructor who is forced into action once again alongside partner ‘Chappy’ who was portrayed in the original film by Gossett, Jr.
“This is really exciting news. I have to admit that I have always been a big fan of the original movie and I loved it when Tom Cruise was a big star. He was my movie star growing up so it makes me feel good to see him coming back,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “I haven’t seen the original movie in a long time but I remember wearing out the VHS tape back in the day. Me and my brother would jump around to the music, pretending we were fighter pilots saving the world. I would love for my kids to experience that. Well, maybe not the VHS thing. I doubt this will be released on VHS.”
VHS was the dominant home theatre medium in the 80’s but has recently halted production for good.
“I am really interested in where they are going to go with the plot. I mean the first movie was a product of its times with Maverick’s father shot down behind Soviet lines and their desperate fight to recover him. That just wouldn’t fly today, so to speak, so a lot of changes would have to be made,” continued Temple. “I do hope that they latch onto the kind of cheesy energy that the first had. I’d really love to see Maverick and Chappy doing the karaoke routine again, that was a great scene. I just hope Chappy doesn’t die in this one. That was traumatizing as a kid.”
Clint Eastwood is reportedly also in talks to return as pilot Mitchell Grant in the sequel.
