ANTONIO BANDERAS TO TAKE BREAK FROM ACTING TO CONCENTRATE ON LIBYAN CRISIS, PARTICLE PHYSICS
April 5 2011
Los Angeles, CA – On the surface there was no reason why Antonio Banderas was going to become a star. True he had a great deal of charisma, as evidenced by his successful early years in Spain. True he is a handsome man, but there are many
handsome men in the world. Stardom selects very few people and it’s likely few would have expected that Banderas was one of those lucky few but for a little while that’s exactly what it did.
Through the 1990’s Banderas led a Latin invasion, becoming a true celebrity who didn’t try to hide his ethnicity but instead embraced it to a degree that no one had seen before. Alongside Salma Hayek Banderas became a star regardless of his ethnicity instead of embellishing it, carving out a path for future stars such as Penelope Cruz, Benicio Del Toro, and Javier Bardem, and even a period of resurrection for Edward James Olmos, one of the original Hollywood Latin strongmen. Contrary to his popularity and his influence however, Banderas’ influence has waned in recent years and never reached the kind of acclaim his progeny have gained. While one could certainly understand a degree of bitterness in the actor, Banderas does not appear to harbour an ill will and instead has focussed on the positive. Now though he plans on taking a temporary break from the film world to try and help resolve the problems in Libya and finally resume his particle physics studies.
“This has been a good career, it has been a great ride and I am so happy to have had the opportunity. I wake up every day and thank God that I have been given this chance that so few people are able to get,” said Banderas in an exclusive interview. “I think it is wonderful that my work has made it possible for so many other actors to have success in Hollywood, much greater success than me. That is actually more satisfying in many ways than my own success.”
Unlike many that have come after him, Banderas has never been nominated for an Academy Award, despite robust campaigning for his performance in ‘Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams’.
“We are all just participants in the world. We play our role, just like we do in the movies, and we move on. It is not for us to judge the final product or what the final results will be but rather to just play our roles and let the world play out by itself,” continued Banderas. “I feel like I have done my work here in movies, at least for now and must move on to another role. First I plan to help negotiate a solution to the problems in Libya and across all those countries having problems and will then turn back to particle physics which of course has always been my first love. When I am done with these things I may come back to acting, or I may not. It is not my place to demand the roles I play.”
Banderas has been heavily criticized for not playing a bigger part in choosing his film roles in recent years which has left him without a hit in nearly a decade.
“I am not the one in control of this life, I am merely a player and I am more than happy to play my role. There are better actors than me, just as there are better peace negotiators than me and better physicists but that does not mean I don’t have a role to play,” continued the actor. “Now is the time for a new part to be played and I am more than happy to be the one playing that role. Now it is just time for the next stage.”
Banderas will next appear on screen in ‘The Big Bang’ alongside James Van Der Beek who is reportedly interested in also transitioning into water vapour.
