ARIZONA TO ONLY ALLOW MOVIES WITHOUT FOREIGNERS TO BE FILMED IN THE STATE

February 14 2011

Phoenix, AZ – There’s little doubt that Arizona has taken quite beating of late. The controversy over their immigration policies is just that latest in a long line of controversies the state has been embroiled of late and that doesn’t seem to be gunfight at the OK corral
changing. Arizona though is a tough state. It’s the state of the O.K. Corral after all, a gunslingers paradise where the romance of the old west was established. The state may be seen as a getaway for the wealthy, but the rough and tumble history is evidence that they are no pushovers.

Now though the state has thrown itself into another controversy with state officials mulling a proposal to no longer allow film productions in the state if they feature foreign principals or players. The proposal in fact specifically states that no foreign content will be allowed in any film produced in the state. That all productions must contain exclusively American content throughout the entirety of the film or they will simply not be permitted permits to film in the state. While few films are made in the state on an annual basis many critics are already concerned that the proposal will scare off much needed dollars even if it does prevent foreigners from stepping on their soil.governor jan brewer

“It’s a tough position to be sure and we aren’t sure that this is the right tact to take. We certainly understand the need to keep our borders secure but we have to understand that many talented film people are foreigners and restricting them could restrict the amount of revenue we could create for the state and the people,” said one critic of the bill. “I think a reasonable amendment would be to allow certain types of foreigners in the state, like the British or the Canadians. We don’t want people coming from all over the world though and we fully support the idea of the movies being totally about American subjects.”

Reportedly Ron Howard had been considering using the state to film an biography of German General Erwin Rommel but balked upon finding that he would have to change ron howard
the topic and have the United States fighting the United States in the war. Rommel’s name would have been changed to Chuck.

“I think that the state is really putting themselves at odds with the industry for all kinds of reasons. I’m sure many people would agree with them on the foreign people, I mean how many non-Americans really lead big movies, but dictating the type of content they are allowed to produce will likely result in few productions hitting the state,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “The clause making all aspects of the film will be the real sticking point. Arizona has some beautiful locales but the creative types in Hollywood don’t like to be told what to do and telling them where and what they can film will force them to take their money elsewhere, that’s just the reality of the situation.”

‘Casablanca’ which was based in Casablanca was filmed in the state, though well before the recent immigration craze.casablanca

“It will certainly keep foreigners out of the state but unfortunately it will likely also keep dollars out of the state as well. Of course with all the rich white people already in the state perhaps that doesn’t matter much,” continued Green. “I think if they were to engage this type of thing it could really hurt the creativity of Hollywood. There are many stories in the world that simply don’t take place in the United States and on the occasion that they want to explore those stories they will be hamstrung by those restrictions.”

There are no productions featuring foreign stories on the slate for the big studios in the next few years.
