JACKIE CHAN STILL MORE ALIVE THAN HIS CAREER
March 31 2011
Los Angeles, CA – By the time Jackie Chan burst onto the scene in the mid-1990’s he had already been a star for decades. Starring in dozens of movies starting in the early 1960’s, Chan was a superstar in much of the world outside the United States for
years, but it was a run of films that truly made him a legend. As is the case for just about all celebrities, true fame and success doesn’t really come until you make it big in America, and after putting in a whole lot of work, Chan finally got that chance and made the most of his opportunity.
Perhaps channelling a long-held affection for another martial arts star, Bruce Lee, the filmgoers of the United States embraced Chan just as the world had done for so many years, spending millions to see him re-releases of older films and new western projects. Finally, after so many years, Chan had become a truly global star, and then it all seemed to vanish. By the mid-2000’s Chan’s output had dwindled and his box office clout all but vanished. That decline in the United States also seemed to prompt an erosion of good will around the world, resulting in failure after failure. Now though, after an apparent internet hoax, it appears that some people do still care about Chan, or at least whether or not he lives or dies.
“Jackie is fine and is busy preparing for the filming of his next movie. It appears that some pranksters on the internet decided to start a rumour that Jackie had succumbed to a heart attack but that is simply not the case,” said a spokesperson for the actor. “Jackie is very grateful to all his fans for their shows of support and he can assure them that he is in top shape and very much ready to entertain them all onscreen again very shortly.”
Chan also posted pictures on his website which purportedly showed him alive.
“Every now and then we hear this kind of rumour, that so and so has died in some awful way and most of the time it turns out not to be true. While this type of thing
can certainly be upsetting to fans and even friends and family, they do occasionally show that there is still interest in these celebrities, that there is still some latent affection for them even if they are dead and can’t do much with it,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Usually these rumours revolve around celebrities past their prime and one has to wonder if maybe, just maybe, there isn’t a reason for that. I mean when they gain a lot of attention, they gain A LOT of attention and that is probably a good thing for upcoming projects. If nothing else it helps gauge the public interest in that particular person and could help secure some shaky projects.”
Eddie Murphy and Bill Cosby have also been the subject of such death rumours.
“Of course with all these rumours going around it will eventually be hard to distinguish whether or not someone has actually died. Eventually we may get to the stage where celebrities are actually dying and no one is willing to believe it, at least until they see a body. Even then we may get to a stage where people don’t really believe it, and considering the status of their careers they may never even realize it’s happened,” continued Temple. “In the short term it may do some good for these dead and dying careers, but like many things it will wear out eventually and people like Jackie Chan will just have to deal with having a dead career for the rest of their lives.”
Chan’s career had no comment on the rumours.
