SIMON COWELL REFUSING TO WATCH THE NEW AMERICAN IDOL AFTER DEPARTURE
February 8 2011
Los Angeles, CA – Occasionally pieces of entertainment come along that defy absolutely every expectation, laugh at the wrath of critics, the indifference of audiences, and become massive success stories. That is more or less exactly what has

happened with ‘American Idol’, a show that began life with low expectations but high hopes and ended up becoming one of the biggest hits in the history of television with millions of viewers turning in night after night for what is now nearly a decade.
Few expected that a televised talent show would ever have been a long term success, never mind becoming such a huge money maker for everyone involved. With hundreds of millions of dollars on the table, ‘American Idol’ is not just a big hit, it’s a phenomenon that has shown little sign of slowing down. However, by the end of last season there were concerns that the gravy train was about the stop. The departure of star and co-creator Simon Cowell left many wondering whether or not the program would even continue, never mind continue at the level of success it had been enjoying. Now though with ratings on par with last year it is clear that the success of the show is solid with or without Cowell, who has now made it clear that he has no interest in the new version of the show and never will.
“I’ve seen three minutes of a recap. From what I’ve seen and from what I’ve heard, it all seems to be going well. What I was more concerned about [was] the ratings falling off a cliff, and that the whole genre might be over,” Cowell told Entertainment Weekly. “But people are still excited about these shows, whether ‘Dancing With the Stars’, which has gotten better over the years, ‘America’s Got Talent’… I think they’ve done a good job.”
Cowell left the program to host a competing show, ‘X Factor’ which will begin airing later this year.
“Idol was one of those shows that I think everyone thought would be a success for a
little while and then just vanish. After all, it is just a souped-up version of ‘Star Search’ and that wasn’t exactly a huge money maker. ‘Idol’ succeeded in large part due to the personalities involved, the characters that drive the show and not so much the auditioning talent and so when they started to leave, particularly the big dog, the assumption was that everything would fall apart,” continued Temple. “That has apparently not happened though and the show is still brining in big ratings and big dollars. No one thought that could happen without Cowell but here it is, doing exactly what people thought it couldn’t do. That is a tribute to the fan base and to the nature of the show itself which obviously had little or nothing to do with Cowell, which everyone assumed.”
Cowell’s new show will debut in September.
“It will be interesting to see whether or not the new show does well, whether or not Cowell has any real star power. I would bet that it’s difficult for him to see the old show continue to do well. I mean there is a reason he left and I don’t think that anyone who leaves a job in a tough way wishes well for their old employer, we all want to see them go down without our contribution. It’s very satisfying, I guess that didn’t happen for Cowell though,” continued Temple. “Further, it speaks to the relatively limited star power of the man himself and questions as to whether or not he will be able to carry the new show anywhere. The ‘Idol’ brand is strong, not Cowell as is clearly obvious at this stage. I would bet that it won’t be long before he’s sitting in front of the TV cursing Steven Tyler. Of course, who amongst us hasn’t done the same thing from time to time.”
The new season of ‘American Idol’ can be seen on Fox pretty much all the time.
