SPIDER-MAN MUSICAL REWRITE TO CUT BROKEN LIMBS FROM STORYLINE
February 17 2011
New York, NY – There is little doubt that Spider-Man has become one of the most enduring of all heroes, comic or otherwise, in the long history of human culture. Like all heroes, fictional or simply embellished, Spider-Man has become an enduring symbol
of the good of humanity, the will to do the right thing when the wrong thing is so easy. He, like all great heroes, spans across cultural boundaries, across nations, and has become something from which millions draw inspiration.
That social status has been clearly evident in the success of the recent movie franchise and of course in the decades-long run of the comic book. That affection has subsequently translated into virtually every other popular medium available including the recent tumultuous musical production of the character’s exploits. That show, which has been in previews for more than three months, has received scathing reviews and has been seemingly cursed by accidents including a serious incident involving a stuntman and another that prompted a lead actor to leave the production. Those issues, as well as the enormous budget and expectations fuelling the production, have certainly put the creative talent on edge and has now prompted them to take a drastic step of rewriting the show to clear up plot holes and to include fewer scenes involving characters falling from ridiculous heights.
“No one is particularly happy. These types of problems are frankly not unique in this world but the high profile nature of the show has put everyone under tremendous pressure. The money, the expectations, the talent involved, all these things have created a really tough situation and that has pushed them to make these dramatic changes,” said a show insider. “No one likes to be in the spot they are in and of course the injuries have caused a lot of other problems for the production including hesitance by the players themselves which of course is never a good thing. There is trouble on all sides and I think this rewrite will help with some of that.”
Reportedly, the rewrite will reduce the number of falling effects which have caused so many injuries. The production has also invested in a high wire system that will restrict the falls which do occur.
“Obviously there has to be some high flying stuff. This is Spider-Man after all so you have to climb buildings and throw bad guys around but they started to realize that they needed a little more protection than just mats and so these wire things started to come into the picture. I think with those and with a tighter script they may have something but we will have to see,” continued the insider. “I think everyone knew this would be a difficult production but no one expected this level of broken bones, or wallets I guess. It has been a tough time but everyone is committed to making it work no matter how scripts have to be written or how many necks have to be broken.”
Amongst other injuries incurred Bono, who created the music for the show, fell ill after eating a bad turkey sandwich.
“This show is perhaps the best example of excess in the musical realm, however things this ambitious have been pulled off before and Julie Taymor has been behind things this big before, including The Lion King. It had all the earmarks of a success going in but obviously there have been problems,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “If they can make this work they will likely have a hit on their hands, and this script rewrite may do the trick. I mean that’s the least they can do considering all the blood that has been spilled to make this thing happen.”
New writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacas has reportedly already tripped twice after taking on the job.
