TWO AND A HALF MEN CREW RELIEVED AFTER SHOW CANCELLED FOR THE SEASON
February 25 2011
Hollywood, CA – There are few people who would argue that ‘Two and Half Men’ is the best work anyone involved with program has done. A great deal of criticism has been levied against the show and its creative talent for the low brow appeal and the
off-colour and unoriginal gags, arguing that the show only appeals to the lowest common denominator. While that may or may not be true, few could argue that the same thing hasn’t been the case for a large number of shows in the history of the medium. The argument could be made that in many ways, ‘Two and Half Men’ has worked in the best tradition of television.
Arguments about the quality of the content aside, the reality is that the show has been a massive hit for everyone involved, generating millions in revenue. Now, with the mental stability of Charlie Sheen very much in question, the program has been put on hiatus for the rest of the season and many fear may never see production again. While that news certainly comes as bad news for fans and many of the people behind the scenes, more than a few crew members are more than relieved to be free from their obligations to the show despite losing out on a whole lot of money.
“I’m actually really glad. Sure, we lose some coin but I have to tell you working on that show was not the best of experiences. It isn’t just the whole Charlie Sheen drama, not even that because he shows up to work every day and is totally professional, but just knowing what we are putting out into the world, that is what is so depressing,” said one crew member who preferred to remain anonymous. “I’ve worked on adult movies and I can tell you that I felt better about doing that work than this. Most of the time you don’t pay attention to the content, but every now and then you catch something one of the actors says and you just feel terrible about having woken up that morning.”
The show had eight more episodes to shoot to complete this season.
“I’m actually really happy about the whole thing. We stuck around and put the time in and that looks good on us which means that we can get different work. If we left in a huff it would be hard to get a new gig but this works out pretty well,” said another crew member. “Normally I go home and shower after every day and it isn’t from sweat. I just need to rub those jokes off me. There’s a real depression that takes over you sometimes, though I do get exposed to the audio a little more than other people. I suppose if you didn’t actually have to be on set it might be easier to do.”
‘Two and Half Men’ reportedly has the highest rate of clinical depression in television.
“I think in many ways this may be a blessing in disguise, at least for the crew. Sheen seems to be falling apart and Jon Cryer will probably have to go back to car detailing, but the opportunities are nothing but positive for the crew. A show will replace this one and that means jobs, hopefully it will be something that they can be proud of,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “I mean you never know. With so many shows out there inevitably some are going to be bad or whatever it is this one actually is but work is work. Thankfully with this at least their souls will be safe, provided Sheen doesn’t come back for next season at least.”
