‘WEIRD AL’ FINALLY GETS APPROVAL TO RELEASE HIS FINAL MASTERPIECE
April 23 2011
Los Angeles, CA – There are two parts of the human cultural experience that draw more passion and more divisions than any other. Those pieces are of course comedy and music. Both disciplines draw lovers and haters, and even two people who can
agree on just about everything will often find themselves at odds when it comes to discussing those two things. For whatever reason, there is no common ground between human beings when it comes to laughs and songs.
One man that has been waging that battle on the frontlines for decades now is ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic whose parody albums have become the gold standard for the strange blend of music and humour. With millions of records sold around the world, his unique fusion of those two debated topics have been the one place where arguments tend to melt, where people tend to come together. Though he his influence has certainly waned in recent years, Yankovic has still remained an icon for peace amongst warring groups, a kind of peaceful oasis where fighting can abate for at least three minutes at a time. Recently though the master himself became wrapped up in a fight of his own over a parody of a hit song by Lady Gaga, an uproar that has apparently now forced even the great Gaga concede and allow Yankovic’s song to be heard, a song that may end up being his greatest work and his final masterpiece.
“After putting my Lady Gaga parody on YouTube this morning – and announcing that it wouldn’t be on my next album because Gaga didn’t approve it – there was a huge outpouring of disappointment from the Internet. Apparently the fact that she didn’t
approve it was news to Lady Gaga herself!” Yankovic wrote on his blog. “Gaga’s manager has now admitted that he never forwarded my parody to Gaga – she had no
idea at all. Even though we assumed that Gaga herself was the one making the decision (because, well, that’s what we were TOLD), he apparently made the decision completely on his own.”
The song, a parody of Gaga’s latest hit ‘Born This Way’ was posted on YouTube by the musician himself, drawing raves from around the world.
“This was certainly an odd situation considering the person involved. Gaga is most certainly a showman (or woman, or whatever) and this seemed like a perfect and natural fit all the way around, yet this little controversy still sprouted for some reason. Thankfully it appears to be over,” said Scrape TV Music analyst Dylan Chambers. “I mean we had the song but it wasn’t going to be included on the album. That would have been a real shame. Yankovic has always worked hard to create complete works, to create a full and clear vision for his albums and losing this song from that work would have damaged that, and from what I’ve heard that would have been a great loss.”
Yankovic’s version, ‘Perform This Way’, will be included on his new album slated for release later this year.
“Too often we have lost potentially great and influential works due to silly things like ego and posturing. Thankfully that didn’t happen this time and we have this work as it was meant to be heard from a true master of the genre. It would have been truly sad to have lost this work for such silly reasons,” continued Chambers. “Thankfully for whatever reason Gaga saw the light of day and did what was right for her craft. This shows how much she truly cares about the art of music and not just the show. Kudos to Gaga, and of course to Yankovic. I can’t wait to experience this work in its full.”
It’s not clear what other artists will be parodied on the new album, the title of which has not been released.
