Hollywood, CA – With his latest film Religuolous a hit, comedian and political commentator Bill Maher has set his sights on a sequel to the film that started his career. Maher has announced that he has started work on a screenplay for the follow up to the 1983 hit D.C. Cab
.
“We feel it’s the perfect time to produce this sequel. With the political climate the way it is, the story of a failing small business trying to make good, especially in D.C., is a statement on our times,” said Maher. “It will of course have all the political commentary you are used to from me, with the feel good atmosphere at least sarcastically present.”
The first film starred Maher, Adam Baldwin, Gary Busey, and Mr. T. Maher did not announce any potential casting choices, though he did indicate that they have had talks with most of the principles including original director Joel Schumacher.
“We hope to have the bulk of the original cast returning. The only character we are going to have to write around is Whitman Mayo’s Mr. Rhythm ,” continued Maher. Mayo died in 2001. “That character really wouldn’t have as much relevance now anyway. He was kind of the conscience of the original film and I can’t imagine making a film with a conscience. My opinion is way more important than that.”
The original film was released to limited success originally though gained popularity on video throughout the eighties. Currently the proposed film has no distribution deal in place.
“Maher has a good deal of visibility but there with the exception of Adam Baldwin no one in the original cast has done anything meaningful in twenty years so I think it will be difficult to not only get distribution, but I can’t imagine who would want to finance it,” said Scrape TV Entertainment analyst Tracey Temple. “Mr. T and Gary Busey have a cult following and that may draw an audience, but beyond that, well it’s just a little baffling. I also don’t see how this fits in to the niche that Maher has carved out for himself in recent years. Obviously it’s going to have some kind of political slant; I just don’t see how the wacky comedy of the original film plays into that type of commentary.”
We attempted to reach some of the other principle cast members for comment and were only able to reach Busey. Unfortunately his answer was more or less unintelligible.
“With this film we have the opportunity to make a profound statement on the American identity,” concluded Maher. “And I’m the person to that statement for better or for worse.”
