BRITAIN DECIDES TO END SLAVERY ON THE ISLAND
September 14 2011
London. U.K. – For most people in the United States the word slavery is almost a slur. It’s a word with incredible potency and incredible power, a word that brings to mind a time in which no people alive today lived, but one that they know should be left in the past for the good of everyone.
Slavery, though, did not end with Abraham Lincoln. That may have been the beginning of the end in the United States, but around the world slavery continued, and continues up until this day. While it might be comfortable and easy to dismiss the idea of slavery as something done by poor and unsophisticated countries, a recent series of arrest in the United Kingdom has shown that it is alive and well in advanced nations as well.
Those arrests have in turn prompted new legislation in Britain to finally outlaw the practice of slavery on the island, a measure which will undoubtedly come as a great relief to thousands bound to servitude, and upset those who have long depended on cheap labour.
“These charges relate to four victims who allege they have been held against their will and forced to live and work like slaves,” said a police spokesperson regarding the arrests. “Police investigations into other offences relating to other potential victims at Greenacres are ongoing, further to the police raid on Sunday, 11 September.”
Four men were charged with a slavery ring that involved 24 people. Most of the charges involve illegal licensing under British slavery rules but the controversy has prompted some in the government to move to just do away with slavery entirely.
“It has become clear that slavery simply does not work in modern Britain. The entire process is far too corrupted and far too open for abuse and there is simply no incentive to change those rules. We feel it is far past the time when Britain joined the rest of the modernized world and simply did away with slavery as a whole,” said one politician who preferred to not be named. “I will support any effort to officially and legally put an end to this practice, no matter the political cost. I believe firmly that the net benefits of ending slavery are much greater than the deficits they provide. This is the best thing for Britain and the best thing for these involved individuals.”
Slaves themselves were not available for comment, for obvious reasons, but one local slave owner and operator spoke with us exclusively.
“It’s really terrible that these bad eggs could ruin things for all of us. Most slave
owners are responsible, are properly licensed, and feed their slaves almost every day. We follow the rules yet we are going to lose our businesses because politicians and law enforcement can’t keep a handle on a few small groups and that is just bollocks,” said Mike of London. “It’s embarrassing for them when things like this happen but it shouldn’t sully the hard work and the proper behaviour of people who follow the rules. They need to crack down on these bad guys, but good slave owners should be allowed to operate as long as they are sticking to the rules. Just because they don’t want to enforce things properly that doesn’t mean we should be punished.”
The proposal is currently being written by a bunch of government aides.
