CANADA MASSING AN ARMY TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE ARCTIC

September 4 2011

Moscow, Russia – In only a few hundred years human beings have been able to divide up the majority of planet Earth. Whether those claims are ancient or relatively new, by creating countries and staking claims humans have successfully divided up most of the liveable space on the planet.canadian ary

Inevitably, then, we have turned to the less habitable places on the planet. Of particular interest is the resource rich arctic region, the North Pole and surrounding areas, which has long been neutral territory. However there have always been countries that have tried to claim the land and now one, Canada, appears ready to take control.

“As soon as he arrived in the Arctic, Harper began to observe the military exercises attended by land, naval and air forces,” wrote Russian columnist Vadim Trukhachev. “It is pretty clear who Canada intends to defend itself from. The U.S., Denmark and Norway have access to the Arctic, and they are NATO allies. Only Russia remains.”

Trukhachev was writing of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s visit to theregion last week, something he has done regularly since taking office. Harper has stated repeatedly that he considewrs the region essential to his nation’s interests.vladimir putin angry

“There are a lot of reasons to want control of Arctic region and a lot of countries vying for it. Aside from Canada and Russia, many Scandinavian nations also have a claim but the real battle is between the two red countries. They have the strongest foothold and, it now appears, the best ability to fight for the territory,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “In recent years Canada has not been a military power but they do have a strong tradition and have been integral parts of fighting forces in many wars. That gives them pride, and pride does a lot for fighting spirit.”

It’s not yet clear how much of Canada’s military has been assigned to the region, or how quickly other forces can be shuttled in.

“If they feels this is in their national interest they will be obligated to act. Canada probably has the strongest foothold in the region and really nothing else to do with their military so they would be in a better position to make a move. Russia has too stephen harper kitty
many other obligations, this is it for Canada really,” continued Martinez. “I think it’s likely that the other countries would simply fall in line with them, especially if promises are made. None of those other countries particularly trust Russia and they might even be eager to stick it to them. That will make the battle pretty one-sided.”

Russia, though, has not given up claims on the territory. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated his country’s claim on the region.

“This is not going to be an easy fight, but it is one that is coming for good or for ill. The arctic is one of the last unclaimed spots on the planet and people want it, and they will fight for it. The Russians will fight, they will not just roll over,” continued Martinez. “As Canada moves in, so will Russia and the best equipped and the most determined will win, just as is the case in any war. The real question will be whether or not things stop there. Once you control the arctic, it’s easy to move forward. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a maple leaf flying over the Kremlin one day.”

Harper was busy posing for portraits and made no comment on the Russian claims.
