FRENCH NUCLEAR PLANT EXPLODES KILLING ONE, MAKING DOZENS SNOOTY
September 12 2011
Bagnols-sur-Cèze, France - A major explosion at the Marcoule nuclear facility in south-eastern France has put the country, and the world, on alert coming just months after the massive disaster at the nuclear facility in Japan.
The explosion occurred Monday afternoon at the waste disposal area of the facility. At least one person was killed and three others were injured.
The men were airlifted to a local hospital.
The rest of the affected area of the facility has been closed pending an investigation, which French officials stated very clearly they could handle on their own.
“According to initial information, the explosion happened in an oven used to melt radioactive metallic waste of little and very little radioactivity. There have been no leaks outside of the site,” a statement from the Agency for Nuclear Safety (ANS) read in part. “There is no need for outside assistance. There is no need to offer outsides assistance. We are more than capable of handling this situation and we will not ask for, nor will we require, aid from anyone else.”
The snooty attitude comes in response to offers from the British and American
governments to aid in the investigation and cleanup. The French nuclear industry has been under increased scrutiny of late, particularly when it comes to aging facilities such as Marcoule complex.
“We are working on this issue. We have contacted French authorities but we have received very limited information. We will continue to press them until we have clear answers,” said IAEA director Yukiya, Amano. “These are not uncommon problems with the French when it comes to these concerns. We have always been able to work through them in the past and we believe we will be able to do so this time around.”
It’s believed that a furnace used to melt waste exploded, causing the injuries, damage, and the snooty attitude. It’s not yet clear what caused the explosion.
French officials did grudgingly admit that there was no radiation leakage outside the damaged area, though even that was like pulling teeth.
“No one likes to admit that they have problems or need help, particularly when it comes to nuclear issues. The whole topic is very taboo in today’s day and age and particularly in Europe where people really don’t like living beside these reactors,” said Scrape TV Disaster analyst Walter Lim. “I think that sensitivity is particularly potent in the wake of the Japanese disaster and, given the way the French are traditionally, it’s just a kind of toxic blend of nuclear waste and attitude. Hopefully that behaviour doesn’t put anyone else at risk, that would be a real shame.”
French officials answered our calls for comment. They gave few details and were extremely curt.
