GADDAFI TROOPS FLOOD INTO NIGER AND START TAKING CONTROL
September 7 2011
Tripoli, Libya – As if the signs weren’t already very apparent, it appears now that troops once loyal to Muammar Gaddafi have started to flee Libya in search of some semblance of stability in Niger. Fleeing with arms, gold, and cash at least 50 vehicle crossed the border into Niger sometime on Tuesday.
Gaddafi himself was not believed to be amongst the people departing the country.
That likely puts a capper on the months-long conflict in Libya. While it may not truly be over until Gaddafi is captured or killed, at least for most people, the departure of so many of the loyalists likely means that major conflict is at an end. Gaddafi may still go out in a blaze of glory, but the war has ended, at least in Libya. Now, with so many soldiers in Niger it appears likely that they will try to re-establish their old regime in a new place and a new country, possibly even with another Gaddafi in charge.
“Vehicles carrying gold, euros and dollars crossed from Jufra into Niger with the help of Tuaregs from the Niger tribe,” said a spokesperson for Libya’s National Transitional Council. “We do not believe that Gaddafi himself was amongst those who fled.”
The Tuarags are a group of former rebels in Niger, most of whom were trained in Libya in the 1970’s and 80’s.
Officials in Niger have confirmed the border crossing and that at least one high-ranking officials, chief of security Mansour Daw, has already reached the city of Niamey.
“This is certainly not a good thing for people trying to wipe out this regime. By travelling into Niger, under the protection of local tribes, they will be pretty much unreachable. It is a good thing that Gaddafi himself was not amongst them, but there are many people in the Gaddafi family all of whom will be loyal to him, or at least his memory,” said Scrape TV African analyst Claude Contee. “They could, in the future, use Niger as a base of operations to strike against Libya or they could simply re-establish the country anew, start a kind of Libya south. That would be a major blow to the rebel forces no matter when it occurs, and not very good for the people of Niger either.”
Several members of Gaddafi’s family, including two of his sons, have already fled into neighbouring Algeria. Officials who remained in the country have confirmed that Gaddafi himself is still in Libya.
“This is a potentially dangerous development. In these countries, particularly in these rural areas, the regime members will be protected and will be safe from persecution. The government in Niger is relatively incapable of doing anything about them, even if they start to form their own country. They just don’t have the capability,” continued Contee. “That means that this conflict is far from over. Perhaps a Gaddafi Libya will suddenly appear each time one is knocked down. That would be a dangerous and quite annoying thing to have happen. It is much better without him, never mind many of him but that may very well be what happens.”
Reports indicate that Gaddafi loyalists have already begun shooting locals in Niger.
