HAMID KARZAI’S BOTTOM LINE TAKES HIT WITH ASSASSINATION OF BROTHER

July 12 2011

Kandahar, Afghanistan – No one ever expected the war in Afghanistan to go well, but no one expected things to go quite like this. Well, no one but Afghans at least. The people of that country know war better than perhaps anyone else. Aside from the afghan soldier
decades-long conflict which had been raging there well before the U.S. ever became involved, the country has a long legacy of warfare and conquest. Afghans have been growing up with stories of war for centuries.

Despite U.S. optimism, despite the overwhelming power that they were able to bring to bear, the war in that country has gone pretty much the same way that every war in that country has gone before. All sides have become mired in a seemingly unending war that has cost a great deal on all sides, one that appears to have no end in sight. There is no better example of that than the killing of Ahmed Wali Karzai, the half brother of President Hamid Karzai. In any other country, the murder of the brother of the President by militants would bring hellfire, but in Afghanistan, it simply brought acceptance and quiet funeral. So much blood has already been spilled that the death if one person, even the relative of the President, is just another death. Still, the death of Karzai is a little different because now the President has lost one of his closest Taliban contacts, who also happened to be his brother.

“The president is upset, he is still in grief, about the death of his brother. Wali was a ahmed karzai
very close brother of the President. This was a case of assassination and it can happen anywhere. It does not signal any deterioration of security in the south,” said government spokesperson Waheed Omer. “This is a very sad day for the President but he suffers this grief just as the people of Afghanistan have suffered so much grief in the past. He joins with them in their suffering.”

The younger Karzai reportedly had major underworld ties and was a key point man for the President.

“This death certainly complicates things for the President and for the future of the country. I’m sure he’s feeling a personal loss with the death of Ahmed, but more importantly it means that he loses one of his most important connections in Kandahar. Obviously, he fell afoul of the local Taliban and now he is gone. That means that Karzai will have to make new connections if he wants to keep things flowing smoothly in that city,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “He is going to have serious trouble keeping things even in that region until a new partner can be found. It’s likely going to limit the flow of supplies to and from the region but more importantly than that, serves as a warning to the President that things aren’t ever going to be the same in the region.”

The younger Karzai was killed by a close friend and several of his bodyguards.hamid karzai speaking

“We will likely never know what exactly happened, what led up to the killing, but it was most likely a kind of financial conflict. Maybe Karzai raised the fees, maybe he was asking for more, maybe he was skimming some off the top. There are all kinds of reasons that it could have been,” continued Martinez. “Whether he likes it or not, the deal has been renegotiated for the President and now he is going to have to deal with the new terms of the agreement. That may be the most painful part of the killing of his brother, the pain of the bottom line.”

Following the funeral, President Karzai began negotiations with several potential partners in the region.
