HEATHER MILLS LOOKING FOR CASH SETTLEMENT IN PHONE HACKING CASE
August 5 2011
London, U.K. – The twine unwinds and unwinds and never seems to stop. Already the massive phone hacking scandal involving News Corps journalists has brought down one paper, seen dozens of arrests, and put a massive media empire on the ropes but the scandal shows no sign of stopping.
With names like Gordon Brown, Piers Morgan, and of course Rupert Murdoch already deeply entrenched in the scandal one more famous name has stepped forward to claim her own involvement. Before she married Paul McCartney, Heather Mills was just an ordinary girl who happened to have her phone hacked by journalists, and now she is looking for payback, just as she did with that marriage.
“He started quoting verbatim the messages from my machine, and ... I'd wondered why they had already been heard, listened to, when it says 'heard messages’,” said Mills. “I said you've obviously hacked my phone and if you do anything with this story, because they were obviously very private conversations about issues we were having as a couple, I said then I'll go to the police.”
The messages were apparently from McCartney before the couple married. It’s not clear how much money Mills is seeking but it will likely be a lot.
“This is really an amazing story. On the surface it doesn’t really seem to matter but it
does play into things like journalistic ethics and privacy issues. It seems like such an abstract but no one would feel that way if it was their phone which was hacked,” said Scrape TV Media analyst Sarah Piper.”It’s actually a very disturbing thing, especially under the auspices of such a big corporation. It is quite rightly a big deal.”
The alleged hacking was by a journalist at the Daily Mirror, a paper not owned by the Murdoch company.
“The fact that this has spread shows that this had become de facto journalism in Britain, that newspapers believe it totally sensible to hack into people’s phones. One has to wonder how they were able to acquire those skills, I can barely use my own phone,” continued Piper. “I would imagine that Mills will have a tough time getting any kind of settlement. Perhaps if she had brought about these accusations sooner than a decade after the incident she might have a chance, but I would bet that the statute of limitations has probably expired. Even in England.”
Nonetheless, it appears that Mills is going ahead with pursuing a suit or at least a settlement.
“Heather believes she was treated poorly and unfairly in this occasion and she believes that the only type of compensation which would make up for it is a financial one. True, Heather has a great deal of money but that is not the concern nor the issue,” said a spokesperson for Mills. “Heather has been in these types of situations before, where she was wronged and the only solution was more money. She has triumphed there and she will triumph here. This is what is owed to her and she will do everything in her power to make sure she gets exactly that.”
Paul McCartney had no comment.
