HOBBYISTS SECRETLY REBUILDING THE BERLIN WALL
August 15 2011
Berlin, Germany – For decades the Berlin Wall was more than a physical barrier that split the East and the West of Germany, it was more than a symbol of the split between the two major powers on the globe, it was a scar in the middle of one of the great cities of the world, a constant reminder of autocratic rule, and a set of prison bars that split families.
More than twenty years later it is difficult for many young people to know how troubling the wall was, and for older people there is understandably a nostalgia for something they spent their whole life seeing. While few would argue that the fall of the wall was anything but a good thing, in recent years a wave of nostalgia has overtaken the city of Berlin, a wave so powerful that many are actually calling for a return of that giant concrete wall.
While such a thing seems unlikely given the current political and social climate of the world, many in the country have started to gather at various sites throughout the country and begun showing their support for the old days, gathering at locations to gradually start rebuilding the wall one brick at a time, much to the chagrin of the city’s mayor.
“We don't have any tolerance for those who nostalgically distort the history of the Berlin Wall and Germany's division,” said Mayor Klaus Wowereit. “The Wall was part of a dictatorship and it's alarming that even today some people argue there were good
reasons to build the Wall. No! There's no legitimate reason nor justification for violating human rights and for killings.”
While the city has rebuilt certain sections of the wall for tourists, city officials have seen long buried sections suddenly sprouting up overnight in some locations.
“There are places where the wall simply cannot be rebuilt, where there are new buildings constructed over the footprints but this fact hasn’t stopped the hobby builders. Overnight some buildings are seeing walls up to their lobby doors, occasionally blocking people from entering,” said a police spokesperson. “These are not actions which we can tolerate. All constructions of this type require a permit and city approval and we have seen none of that here. We will prosecute all people trying to build walls in the middle of the city.”
Police have also noted that the fresh construction projects are a safety hazard and have caused significant traffic snarls on occasion.
“We will patrol the areas of the former wall and we will deal with anyone who feels that they are above the law. Armed guards will be posted along the route and all violators will be dealt with in a severe manner. We take this issue very seriously and we will not tolerate such actions,” continued the spokesperson. “People must respect the rule of law. If at some stage the city decides to rebuild the wall people will have to respect that. Simply put, people cannot build walls wherever they please, not in Berlin at least.
Local contractors have long been complaining about thefts but little has been done until recent events.
