HOSNI MUBARAK DEFIANTLY REFUSING TO EAT HOSPITAL FOOD
July 28 2011
Cairo, Egypt – There is perhaps no person in the world more shamed right now than Hosni Mubarak. Like many of the pharaohs he emulated, Mubarak’s world has come crashing down. Once the entrenched leader of a mighty and powerful nation, the 83-
year old former President is now confined to a prison cell as he awaits trial on multiple charges. There is no doubt that such a fate has to weigh heavily on Mubarak as he sits embarrassed and degraded in a hospital bed which housed so many people by his command.
This, unfortunately for Mubarak, is often the fate for men of his stature. It has happened over and over again in the past and has only accelerated in the modern era. The age of dictators is rapidly coming to an end, not only in Africa and the Middle East but all over the world. Mubarak, for all his loneliness, is in good company alongside names such as Mussolini, Milosevic, Pinochet, Ceausescu, and Marcos in the long history of leaders who went a little too far. Inevitably Mubarak will die in custody, denied the peace that one would wish for a former leader and few would argue that such a fate isn’t deserved. Mubarak, however, is one of those people and, according to hospital insiders, is refusing to eat, principally because the food is not nearly to his standards.
“He is extremely weak. He completely abstains from food and takes on liquid and juices. He is offered many different options from the hospital menu but none of these things are to his liking. We are not in the business of offering special meals, aside
from aiding people with medical conditions. Not liking the food is not an option. This is
not a takeout service,” said a hospital insider. “Mr. Mubarak will eat the food with which he is provided or he will not eat at all. We understand that the food here may not be to his normal standards but these are his options and he will eat this or go hungry.”
Like many hospitals, the food at the Cairo facility is bland and plasticy.
“Personally I haven’t had any real issues with hospital food the few times I’ve been in those facilities but I don’t have nearly the palate that I’m sure someone like Mubarak must have. For thirty years he essentially ate whatever he wanted whenever he wanted to eat it and now, well it’s not really the same thing is it?” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “It’s really a sad kind of end for Mubarak, almost to the point where you could feel sorry for him. Almost. I mean he did rule over his country with an iron fist, imprison people and authorize torture and murder so that has to at least be in the back of your mind. One could argue that he has well-earned his present dietary choices, but he is still a human being after all.”
The Baba Ghannoug is apparently awful but the Falafel, which is only served on Thursdays, is apparently not bad.
“It has to be a little degrading for Mubarak to be forced to eat specific things. Aside from the taste, he really doesn’t have an option to say no. If he wants a specific thing and it’s not on the menu he has to do without and that isn’t something he is likely used to experiencing,” continued Hander. “I guess he now has a little understanding of what his people experienced under his rule. I mean excluding the torture element of course, or sleeping in rat infested cells. I mean at least his food doesn’t have maggots, but that doesn’t really make it much better. For Mubarak the fall has been much steeper and that can be very tough to deal with. Hopefully he finds something he likes otherwise he’s going to have a short trial.”
Mubarak’s trial is due to start August 3, Torly day.
