INDONESIA TO PREMIERE TV VERSION OF WHO WANTS TO MARRY A CANNIBAL
August 13 2011
Jakarta, Indonesia – Finding love is not an easy thing for everyone. For some it comes easily, at least in the beginning, but for many people finding the right person is a long challenge, a process that can be painful, traumatic, and ultimately fruitless.
Such has been the case for one Indonesian man who is now the first contestant on a new game show in Indonesia.
Sumanto, a 39-year old farmer, is the first contestant on that new show, hoping to find true love for the first time and, if possible, a good cook. Upon his release from a mental asylum in Java, Sumanto will try to woo beautiful women in hopes of finding the right one.
“The most important thing is that she is a woman and can cook. She does not have to be beautiful. What's important is that she can take care of me and my children,” said Sumamnto. I would also like her to be religiously devout.”
Sumanto has apparently struggled with love his entire life, but things took a disastrous turn in 2003 when he was arrested for digging up and cannibalizing a corpse. Since then his love life has been more or less dead.
“We felt he was the perfect person with whom to launch this show. It is a typical story. He is a humble man of meagre means. He is a hard worker, a farmer, who has simply never been able to find the right person. These qualities made him the perfect person for the program,” said one of the producers. “We had the idea for this show
and we all agreed that there was no one who was more perfect as the first contestant than Sumanto. He is well known throughout Indonesia.”
Sumanto spent three years in prison before being remanded to the mental rehabilitation facility.
“He is reformed, which is exactly what we wanted. We admit that the title of the show is a little sensationalistic but this is show business. We did not want someone who would turn around and eat the winner on their honeymoon. Because he is reformed he is a great fit,” continued the producer. “We feel that this is a program with great potential, but we will always make sure that the contestants are stable and rational. The last thing we want is an incident, we just want to help people find love.”
Sumanto apparently primarily eats spinach now. He claims to no longer have an appetite for human flesh and will have to sign an agreement to that effect to appear on the show.
“Cannibalism, outside of tribal rituals, is a very obscure and dark corner of the human

psyche. Like many of the dank corners of the human brain, the root causes of and thus the solutions to cannibalism are difficult to determine. That makes it very difficult to determine whether or not a person has been cured in any real way,” said Scrape TV Psychology analyst Dr. Sarah Welp. “From what I have heard he has not gotten intense therapy or analysis which makes determining his appetites even more of a challenge. Yes, he hasn’t been eating human meat while in captivity but there is no guarantee that will continue once he is free which makes this whole thing a bit of a risk for these women. But maybe if they are good cooks they will be able to stave him off, at least for a little while.”
The show is scheduled to premiere early next year.
