ISRAEL HITS HAMAS TARGETS AFTER GENERAL STRIKE STOPS GARBAGE COLLECTION
August 3 2011
Jerusalem, Israel – Israeli officials have struck out against multiple targets in the West Bank and Gaza Strip after a general strike in the country shut down municipal services. The strike, an act of sympathy to the popular protests sweeping across the country, stopped street cleaning, garbage collection, and other daily functions.
The protests in Israel, like those in the rest of the Middle East, have started to cascade in recent weeks culminating in a general strike. As a result of the actions, Israeli officials ordered strikes on multiple targets in Palestinian controlled territories on Tuesday.
“These types of actions are unacceptable. The people of Israeli have for too long been the victim of these types of aggressions and we will no longer tolerate this activity. These actions we have taken will show the belligerents once and for all that we are serious,” said a government spokesperson. “Fomenting unrest and strike in our nation is totally intolerable. We have shown with these strikes that these actions are intolerable and that they must not continue.”
There were no reports of casualties from either region, though following the attacks garbage collection resumed, suggesting that the strikes had the desired effect.
“Israel is in a very tough position. They face threats from outside and now inside the country. This had made the leadership very nervous and edgy and creates a very hair-trigger type of environment. Any type of actions in the country can lead to these

things,” said an Israeli insider who preferred not to be named. “It is a hard thing to have dirty streets and to have limited garbage collection. They already limit the number of bags we are allowed to put out and so some of these bags will be sitting around for weeks before we can get rid of them. That is very taxing.”
Much of the protests revolve around the long-standing housing issue which has been a long-standing issue for Palestinians.
“Let’s just say that the groups in the Palestinian territories have a vested interest in the housing issue. They have a passionate response to all types of housing concerns and that makes them very much invested in these protests,” continued the insider. “There is no evidence that those groups have been involved in the protests or in the strike but there is also no proof that they haven’t been and that very much makes them culpable. This is why we made these strikes.”
The strikes made huge messes in Palestinian streets, none of which has been cleaned up at this time.
“We reject these actions and these accusations by the Israelis. These attacks against our territories are a violation of international law and of all human decency. We are not responsible for their garbage collection and we cannot be held responsible when these things are not done properly,” said a spokesperson for Hamas. “We will respond to these aggressions in kind. This type of action will receive a response and we will leave them with much more than a little garbage on the street to clean up. This is merely the beginning of this story.”
U.S. officials reportedly asked Israel to put on a double shift in order to collect all the garbage which was missed yesterday. Israel declined.
