LIBYAN REBELS LAUNCH NEW OFFENSIVE AGAINST LOYALIST RESTAURANTS
August 14 2011
Az-Zawiyah, Libya – It’s been a long time since any news, good or bad, has come from the opposition forces in Libya. Those battles, which at one time seemed to an unstoppable force sweeping across the nation, have more or less halted in recent months as forces loyal to the Gaddafi regime have started to dig in and secure their positions.
That, however, has not stopped the determination of many of the rebels who have continued to fight, even in their limited ways, against the government forces. There is perhaps no better example of that than the current conflict being waged in Az-Zawiyah, a city in the western portion of the country which is a major supply route from Tunisia. In that city, rebels have dug in and started striking restaurants, convenience stores, and toilet facilities in a effort to dislodge entrenched government forces.
“At first we simply stopped purchasing from them, hoping that that the lack of business would drive them out of the city but since that did not work we were forced to take more dramatic steps and strike against these supporting forces,” said one rebel fighter who preferred not to be named. “We have broken windows, we have gone into the buildings and broken things. We have clogged toilets and just generally made chaos. Our goal is to make these places unusable by the government forces and that that will force them to leave.”
Similar efforts have been made throughout the country, with limited results, particularly in the oil-rich town of Brega which was at one time a rebel stronghold.
“We believe these efforts will eventually push the government soldiers to realize thatwe mean business, that we will not back down and that there will be no restrictions to the things we are willing to do to win this war,” continued the rebel. “We will continue to disrupt their efforts and their forces and we will eventually push them out for good. These are not people we wish to have around in our country and they must all go.”
Government forces have apparently been annoyed by the rebels but supply lines have not been disrupted.
“The first stage in any guerrilla war is being willing to sacrifice you own well- being for the conflict. They are more than willing to sacrifice their own comfort and their own

well-being for the good of the cause and that is a core part of the guerrilla manifesto,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “They are taking action to disrupt the flow of goods and services and that is essential if you are going to unsettle entrenched forces. I’d imagine it is difficult to get deep into the cities which is probably hampering their efforts but the core philosophy is correct. Perhaps if they are able to disrupt the facilities on the outside government forces will retreat, causing them to rely on smaller selection of places to eat and that could make things very inconvenient for them, but very advantageous for the rebels.”
In some buildings rebels have managed to permanently damage water heaters, resulting in some very cold showers for government soldiers.
