NEW TERRORIST THREAT SHOWS AL-ZAWAHIRI IS GETTING THINGS DONE AS NEW HEAD OF AL-QAEDA
September 9 2011
Washington, D.C. – It’s likely that most people just assumed that there would be some type of terrorist activity would occur around the time of the 9/11 anniversary. After all, it is number ten and everyone, regardless of culture or religion or race understands just how important that can be. That’s why very few people were all that concerned when word came that a credible threat had been discovered.
That credible threat, it now appears, came directly from al-Qaeda, exactly from whom one would assume such a threat to have any type of weight. Further, it now appears that newly christened al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was actually the mastermind behind the new project. While details of the threat are scant at this stage, the mere fact that the leader of the group was directly involved in the planning shows how important it was to the group, and that unlike his predecessor, al-Zawahiri is eager to make things happen.
“He actually recruited three men himself, did the interview, detailed the mission, everything. The idea was to set up a series of car bomb attacks, what else, in a number of major cities to celebrate the anniversary. Being that deeply involved is not something bin Laden ever did, that’s why it’s so astonishing,” said a terrorist insider. “That has made everyone a little concerned that he isn’t going to be the soft leader everyone assumed. He appears to, at the very least, be out to prove himself. However if he is going to be hands on with the attacks it could signal a dangerous new direction for the group.”
Al-Zawahiri was long regarded as the guy who got things done in the group, something he may have taken with him when assuming the leadership role.
“Al-Qaeda is much smaller now, much more compact and that means that the type of bureaucracy that hobbled bin Laden simply doesn’t exist, making it possible for al-Zawahiri to be more hands on, more in the trenches. I’m sure that will mean a lot to the guys, though equally it could turn a lot of people off,” said Scrape TV Terrorism analyst Doug Davids. “It’s always nice when the boss comes from down on top to lend a personal hand, but there also comes a time when you just want him to leave, when you just want to get on with your work. Al-Zawahiri has a reputation for being a little exacting, a bit of jerk really, and that could turn potential recruits off.”
It’s believed unlikely that any bombs will go off on the 11th, much to the chagrin of many who had been hoping for an explosive celebration.
“The disadvantage al-Qaeda has, had had for a long time, is that the events of 9/11 made them enemy number one. That means that all the resources are directed at them and so pulling things off can be really tough. Frankly, al-Zawahiri would have been better off starting his own group years ago, but that’s not what he did,” continued Davids. “He got what he wanted and now he’s going to have to handle it. I think that he’s going to find it a much tougher job than he believed previously, particularly if he meddles too much in dealing with the people under him. That could just lead to mass defections and that’s not good for anyone.”
Al-Zawahiri was not available for comment.
