RESTAURANTS SCORE MAJOR VICTORY AFTER CHINA LIFTS DOG BAN
August 10 2011
Jiangmin, China – It’s a major victory for pet lovers and restaurants across China after city officials in the port city of Jiangmin voted to repeal a proposed ban on dogs in the city. The band, which would have forced many residents to ‘resettle’ or euthanize their pets, and leave restaurants without one of their major dishes.
Luckily for dog owners of all breeds, city officials decided to repeal the dog ban at the last minute – it was to go into effect August 10th – leaving the city and her residents free to enjoy everything their four-legged friends have to offer.
“I am tremendously happy and proud to see that public uproar from within China stopped this unethical killing' Grace Ge Gabriel, Asia regional director for the International Fund for Animal Welfare told the NPR.”In the past we were only able to stop some of the dog culls with international pressure.”
The massive cull would have eliminated the bulk of the dogs throughout the city. Several such culls have taken place in the city over the last few years.
“This is a great relief. I love my dog very much and I simply would not have been able to do what the law asked. I am very glad that this has happened,” said one local dog
owner. “I hope that this thing never happens again. It is very sad that the city would do something like this to poor animals. They do not deserve this type of treatment. They are only animals.”
The cull was apparently an effort to rid the city of 3.8 million of potential rabies outbreaks.
“Luckily all the animals we have come through here have been vaccinated but that is not the case throughout the city. Many of the dogs here are owned by poorer people who don’t have the money to keep up-to-date with the shots and that results in some unhealthy animals,” said a local restaurant owner. “That causes problems for all of us but we still do not believe that killing these animals is the solution. We would prefer to see free vaccinations so that our business can stay healthy.”
The exact number of dogs in the city is not clear.
“This is a good day for all of us. For the people who own dogs, for us, and for our customers. Hopefully we can enact a solution that won’t require these types of things from happening. It is in all of our interests to keep the dogs of Jiangmin healthy and happy. We will do what we can to encourage this, “continued the restaurant owner. “The city made a good decision with this and we hope that they will continue to make these wise choices. The best solution for everyone in this city is that dogs remain healthy and abundant. It is good for the morale of the city and good for our profits. This is a good day.”
It’s believed that group of restaurant owners was largely responsible for repeal, offering free meals to city officials.
