SARKOZY SILENT AFTER PLOT AGAINST STRAUSS-KAHN UNRAVELS
July 1 2011
New York, NY – The 2012 Presidential election was already going to be a big deal. Elections for the top job always are, but this time it was going to be a really big deal. Not in the United States mind you, though that will be big, but in France where the
election could very well help determine the entire future of the European Union, an organization which has been walking ever closer to the brink of obliteration.
Though he is seen as a charismatic and even dynamic leader, Nicolas Sarkozy is not the most popular President in the history of his country. No matter his public profile, much like friend Barack Obama, the voters of his nation have become very vocal in their disapproval of their leader. So much so that Sarkozy has only mentioned a passing interest in running again, perhaps seeing that a defeat is inevitable, a defeat which would no doubt ruin his reputation. Whether he runs again or not it is clear that the office of the President is open for the taking, and there are many suitors. Now there may be one more after former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was released without bail after new evidence in his sex assault case was presented to prosecutors. That in turn may leave the one-time front runner open to run for the Presidency once again, and see Sarkozy step aside as his plans start to unravel.
“It became clear to prosecutors that there were serious holes in the testimony of the accuser and that has led to this release. The charges are still pending and Mr.
Strauss-Kahn is still required to stay in the city, but this would not have happened unless there was a very good reason for it,” said a police insider. “There are very aware that this is a high profile case and they want to make sure they get things right. I believe it’s likely that the only reason the charges haven’t been dropped entirely is because they are trying to make sure all the details are correct before moving forward.”
Strauss-Kahn,62, was accused of sexual assault on a maid in May. He was later let go from his job as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.
“This is a very big deal. He was believed to be, before all this began, the chief opponent for Sarkozy and given the latter’s reputation of late, quite possibly the next President of France. This case has actually helped that reputation rather than hurt it because many people in France believed it a conspiracy, which it may very well turn out to be,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “If the charges are dropped I wouldn’t be surprised to see him jump back into the race and ride the wave of support the top job. What looked to be the worst thing in his life may turn out be the best. I’m sure Sarkozy is a little upset and even worried now.”
Though he has never been directly named, it is Sarkozy who would most benefit from Strauss-Kahn’s absence in the race.
“If he does run for President and if he does win it will completely change the face of France. The country has been moving away from exactly the type of policies a Socialist like him supports and it’s likely they will start to restore some of those things, and as an influential member of the EU perhaps affect those changes across the board,” continued Hander. “Much of what Sarkozy has done will be undone and that is a blight on his Presidency. It makes perfect sense that he would try to eliminate any competition but especially this one. Now it appears that the whole scheme is backfiring on Sarkozy and his cadre and he may have actually given the Socialists the power and influence to sweep into power and totally wipe away all memories of Sarkozy and his reign.”
The office of the President did not return calls. Sarkozy is believed to be secluded away somewhere in Switzerland.
