TALIBAN OFFERS BIN LADEN UP FOR TRIAL A LITTLE TOO LATE
September 14 2011
Kabul, Afghanistan – By now the story is rhetoric. The tale of the Taliban and al-Qaeda is so clearly defined, so well documented, that it could be recited by school children. The Taliban took charge of Afghanistan and allowed al-Qaeda to operate in the country, from where it launched multiple attacks against foreign targets including the World Trade Center.
That move, perhaps a little short-sighted considering al-Qaeda’s ambitions, resulted in a ten year war in Afghanistan and deaths of thousands of Taliban workers, supporters, and innocent people. It’s a tragedy on every scale and it all could have been avoided had the Taliban just turned over bin Laden.
Which they tried to do.
A new report has surfaced documenting an offer made by the Taliban government to turn over bin Laden for trial well before the 9/11 attacks, an offer turned down by the U.S. government who apparently saw no need to capture the terrorist leader, an offer that may have prevented the attacks in the first place. Now the Taliban is making the same offer again, albeit a little too late.
“Even before the attacks, our Islamic Emirate had tried through various proposals to resolve the Osama issue. One such proposal was to set up a three-nation court, or something under the supervision of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference,” said former Taliban foreign minister Wakil Ahmed Muttawakil. “But the US showed no interest in it. They kept demanding we hand him over, but we had no relations with the US, no agreement of any sort. They did not recognise our government.”
Instead, bin Laden remained free. It’s not clear exactly when the Taliban made the offer, but Muttawakil confirmed that it still stands.
“We are more than willing to put bin Laden on trial for his crimes against the United States and the rest of the world. All that would be required is that our government be restored and we be returned to power and we will try Osama bin Laden as we offered previously,” continued Muttawakil. “We have said this many times to the United States and it continues to be open. Whenever they choose to take us up on this offer, they may come to us. It is an open opportunity.”
Because bin Laden was killed in May, and his body buried at sea, it is believed unlikely that the U.S. would consider an offer to return the Taliban to power on those conditions.
“The United States did not consider the Taliban the rightful government of Afghanistan and did not want to respect it’s authority to try anyone, not even bin Laden. I mean the Taliban sent ambassadors to the United States and they actually met with President Bush, but still they weren’t the recognized government and so they couldn’t have made a deal,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “They should have, probably, considering the outcome but that is kind of off the table right now. It’s possible that the Taliban still hasn’t heard of bin Laden’s death, though I would say that is unlikely. It’s more likely they are trying to pull the wool over the U.S.’s eyes but they won’t get fooled again.”
Typically, Taliban justice kills people after trial, not before.
